1985 Pontiac 6000 Preview summaryImage

One of the tools Pontiac used to "build excitement" was the Pontiac 6000, a mid-sized sedan or coupe that promised performance engineering and a powerful ride cleverly disguised in the conservative body of a family car. There were few changes to the 1985 6000, which boasted a roomy interior for four and excellent gas mileage, at around 26/34 mpg. Because it was so durable and affordable, it made a great family car or starter car. Put off by its bland exterior, drivers were treated to a surprisingly enjoyable ride experience. The 1985 6000 again made Car and Driver's Ten Best list.

The base and LE sedan and coupe came with three engines. A 2.5-liter I4, 2.8-liter V6 and diesel 4.3-liter V6 were matched with a 3-speed automatic transmission. A 4-speed auto tran with overdrive was optional. The sporty STE sedan featured a stiffer suspension and performance tires along with a souped up high-output 2.8 V6. A four-door wagon offered more versatility in terms of passenger and cargo space, perfect for familes.

The 1985 Pontiac 6000 sure built a lot of excitement in its customers. There were few complaints among owners, beyond the normal list of repairs over the years. What they do say is that the 6000 lasts forever if taken car of (many are still driving their original '85). They love the fuel economy, engine power, and great pickup. The handling is light and easy, like a smaller car, but inside is roomy and spacious with very comfortable seats.
