Practical, dependable, reliable are common words that come up when 1987 Pontiac 6000 owners describe their love affair with this mid-sized sedan. Good gas mileage and an affordable pricetag made it appealing to first-time buyers.

The 1987 6000 came in three body styles: sedan, coupe, and wagon. There were several engine choices, from the somewhat weak 2.5-liter, 92-hp I4 to the 2.8-liter, 112-hp V6. There was also a diesel 4.3-liter V6, and the sports performance STE sedan had a 140-hp version of the 2.8 V6. A 3-speed manual transmission was standard. New for the 1987 Pontiac 6000 was a an S/E sedan and wagon trim, which essentially added a sportier packaging to these cars, with the same ground effects as the STE. Also new was a 5-speed manual transmission option on the 2.8 V6, in addition to the 4-speed auto overdrive option. The STE got two memory settings for an adjustable driver's seat. ABS brakes were standard on the STE.

Other than that, there was little that needed replacing in the 1987 6000, which saw many happy fans behind the wheel, whether they were toting around a family in the wagon or enjoying their first car in college. Drivers feel their 1987 6000 is very dependable, with a never-say-die engine. The STE is faster than its exterior looks, and a fun cruiser. Inside seating is roomy. The 6000 feels safe, sturdy, and indestructible. It is also an affordable car due to its good fuel economy and inexpensive replacement parts. A weak 4-cylinder engine is the major disappointment, though it is adequate for city driving.

I bought this car for 900 dollars and drove it without incident for one year. I then re sold it for 600 dollars. I have never been able to drive car for so little money. I did have to put a pencil in carb on cold mornings but that just added to the character.Aug 10, 2008
