The new addition to the 1983 Pontiac 6000 lineup is the 6000 STE, the Special Touring Edition of the mid-size sedan (it was not available as a coupe). Putting the 6000 onto the sports sedan map with similar European cars, the STE was supposedly the first U.S-produced performance sedan. It featured a high output version of the 2.8-liter V6 (at 140-hp), plus a firmer suspension, adjustable shocks, performance tires, and the requisite sports badging and style touches.
The base and LE 1983 6000s were still offered as a sedan and coupe, with three engine options -- a 2.5, 92-hp I4, 2.8, 112-hp V6, and a diesel 4.3 V6. A 3-speed automatic was standard and 4-speed optional. The interior of the sedan was quite roomy, and even with the stiffer suspension of the STE, long rides were very comfortable.
Owners comment that their 1983 6000s seem to last forever. They enjoy the easy, smooth handling and great performance of the STE. The interior is also considered well done, quiet, and comfortable. Car and Driver magazine put the 6000 on its ten best list for 1983.
