1980 Chevrolet Camaro Preview summaryImage

After a record-setting 1979, the 1980 Chevrolet Camaro would succumb to an oncoming recession and continuing fuel crisis. Only 152,005 Camaros were sold, with a larger percentage (over a third at 51,104) opting for the more fuel-efficient V6.

The base engine was a 229-ci V6 rated at 115 horsepower, while the California version was a 231-ci rated at 110 horsepower. The Z28 brought its buyers the power they sought: a 350-ci V8 rated at 190 horsepower. It was also given a new look, with an intimidating grill sporting the Z28 emblem.

I drove my 1980 Z-28 right out of the showroom with 8 miles on it. I loved that car to death. Living in NYC without the advantage of having a garage, the T-Tops were stolen more times than I can remember. They were very much in demand and because of this, each time they needed to be replaced, they needed to be special ordered. Needless to say, the tablecloth I used as a tarp to protect it from the rain did not work very well to keep the inside of my baby safe from the rainy summers. Eventually, the carpeting began to wear thin and the electrical wires underneath began to short out. The body began to warp, as well. But when she was on the open road, boy did she sing.
