1974 Chevrolet Camaro Preview summaryImage

The 1974 Chevrolet Camaro continued to drop in power and increase in safety as government regulations and oil embargoes took their toll on the proud pony car. New bumpers were installed at either end of the car, and an AM/FM radio was optional.

While the oil embargo and drop in power was a problem in 1974, today it gives restoration fiends room to grow their engines. Tuning these cars is fairly popular, and the 350-ci V8's provide a good place to start. The base model was a 250-ci L6 rated at horsepower, and the Z-28 had a 350-ci V8 rated at 245.

This was my first car, was a type LT with a 350 and automatic transmission. It was very dependable and had no major problems until the mileage got to about 120,000 at that point the engine started to drink as much oil as it did gas. That was typical for the engines of that day, they weren't made to last much over 100,000 miles. Brakes were not the best as the rotors would warp very easily if you lived anywhere that required you to drive through puddles of water. Was not the quickest car because of the gearing but was amazed that you could go from zero to 60 in first gear. At speeds over 100mph you could feel the front of the car starting to float a bit and because it was still a heavy car the brakes were really not up to the task of stopping a car that was moving that fast if you needed to stop form a high speed you would be greeted by the smell of overheated brake pads. In snow it was horrible, the rear was too light for the power and you were better off leaving it in the driveway. A couple of things that would make it happier was to remove the smog crap it was from the time when they put a pump on that would rob power to inject air into the exhaust to try and control pollution, was a hp thief but was also easy to remove. It was also one of the few cars I ever had that required you to have the seat belts buckled in order to start the car, that system was easily removed as the black box control was under the front drivers seat and when removed the car no longer required seat belts to be buckled. Major things to look for if you are looking for one is the front valance under the front bumper they are fiberglass and because people don't know how low the front of the car is to the ground are often broken when people park the cars and run them over the curb. Also be wary of rust around the wheel wells. Doors are also very heavy and can easily be sprung out of alignment if the person uses the door to get out of the car. Also the radiator has the transmission cooler running inside it so if it is prone to having a leak in the transmission that will then shoot fluid into the cooling system causing the coolant to become an oil muck that will overheat the engine. If in doubt of the age of the radiator replace it before it acts up on its own. Apr 26, 2012

Car had too much power for its tires, brakes, and handling. Could have been a good dragster, went fast in a straight line but couldn't turn or stop well. Was afraid to put it in my garage because it always smelled of raw gas when you were near it, never could find the reason. Was my first company car almost got me in trouble when the president's Lincoln was in for service and he bowed it, he stomped on it like he did with his car and peeled out through an intersection, got him a warning ticket.Nov 02, 2010
