The Toyota GR86 is celebrated by owners for its fun driving experience, nimble handling, and affordability across its model years. Many drivers find it to be an enjoyable sports car that delivers strong performance and engaging handling. The stylish design and interior add to its appeal. However, some drivers express concerns about its lack of power relative to the price and note limited passenger space, particularly criticizing the rear seats. Overall, the GR86 is seen as a great option for driving enthusiasts who prioritize performance and fun over practicality.

Reviewed a 2024 Toyota GR86 on May 19, 2024
In the past three years Ive purchased a new Porsche Cayman, a new Hyundai Veloster, and this GR86. The Porsche was unreliable from day one and the dealer never could repair it. The Veloster was quirky looking, but it performed better than the Porsche and its 8 speed DCT was MUCH better than the 7 speed DCT in the Porsche. But the GR86 looks better than either of the other two and is more fun to drive because of the manual transmission. The GR86 doesnt have quite as much horsepower but it handles better and because it is a non turbo, I expect better long term reliability.

Toyota GR86 test drive
overall

This two-door coupe is both fun and affordable.
There aren’t too many inexpensive sports cars available these days. Sure, you can always head to the Porsche dealership and spend six figures to get a car with so much power it really belongs on a race track, but who has that kind of money? For the rest of us, there is the 2025 Toyota GR86. This affordable sports car offers up plenty of thrills without breaking the bank and it’s just as comfortable on a twisty mountain road as it is running weekend errands.
Now in its second generation, the 2025 GR86 gets a few performance upgrades as well as a limited-production Hakone Edition, playing homage to the Hakone Turnpike in Japan, a road popular with driving enthusiasts. While the Hakone Edition served as our tester for this review, there is still plenty of fun to be had with the base and Premium trims.
Verdict: The 2025 Toyota GR86 is a nimble little sports car, perfect for those who want cheap thrills, good looks and a manual transmission option.
