Many drivers appreciate its spacious interior and robust performance, making it a popular choice for families and adventurous driving alike. However, poor fuel economy and the lack of modern features are common concerns among owners. Despite these drawbacks, the 4Runner's long-term durability and high resale value are often highlighted as key advantages.

The Toyota 4Runner's current nationwide average price is $36,975, and its year-round low is $34,112.48. That puts the model in a fairly broad pricing band depending on how new you want to go. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the Toyota 4Runner earns strong marks from owners across the lineup, and its appeal is consistent from older models to the newest ones. The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, off-road capability, and comfort, along with its spacious interior and durable, family-friendly character. The 4Runner also stands out for its long-term value and rugged personality, which come through clearly in owner feedback across multiple years.
Expert reviews rate the 2014 and 2025 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on firm ride quality, poor fuel economy, and second-row comfort that can feel tight in some recent versions. You also see recurring notes about the 4Runner’s old-school character, which is part of its appeal but also shapes the overall driving experience.
27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota 4Runner models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Toyota 4Runner as durable, dependable, and well suited to long-term ownership. Expert commentary reinforces that reputation by emphasizing the model’s rugged construction, strong resale value, and long-running appeal for buyers who want a vehicle built around toughness and capability.
- Owners rate the Toyota 4Runner between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and how the vehicle was used than to the model’s core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota 4Runner?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 97.6% |
| 2025 | 95.4% |
| 2024 | 91.7% |
| 2023 | 86.8% |
| 2022 | 81.4% |
| 2021 | 76.1% |
| 2020 | 69.6% |
| 2019 | 64.8% |
| 2018 | 61.4% |
| 2017 | 58.7% |
| 2016 | 58.5% |
| 2015 | 58.3% |
| 2014 | 59.5% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.

- Safety package: Safety Sense 3.0 suite
- Infotainment: 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 23 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined
Which Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2026 Toyota 4Runner offers these trims:
- SR5: The entry trim starts the lineup and gives you the 4Runner’s core body-on-frame character at the lowest price point.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds a more road-oriented appearance and sits above the SR5 in the lineup.
- TRD Sport Premium: This version builds on TRD Sport with added equipment and a more upscale feel.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value trim if you want the most affordable way into the most efficient 4Runner, and it adds a locking rear differential, Bilstein remote-reservoir dampers, 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, skid plates, and the Multi-Terrain System.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This trim adds the Multi-Terrain Monitor, which uses the surround-view camera to provide several extra views to aid off-roading.
- Limited: This trim brings leather upholstery and a full-time 4WD system with a locking center differential.
- Platinum: This trim adds leather upholstery and standard i-Force Max hybrid power, along with full-time 4WD.
- Trailhunter: This off-road-focused trim adds a snorkel, Old Man Emu shocks, rock rails, an on-board compressor, an ARB roof rack, and steel skid plates.
- TRD Pro: This top off-road trim adds Fox adjustable remote-reservoir shocks, an aluminum front skid-plate, underbody protection, disconnecting sway bars, and unique front bumpers.
What Toyota 4Runner do most buyers choose?
The Toyota 4Runner years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,847 | 29.8% |
| 2023 | 3,421 | 29.6% |
| 2022 | 3,410 | 28.9% |
| 2025 | 3,163 | 29.2% |
| 2021 | 2,649 | 28.7% |
| 2020 | 2,356 | 27.9% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, newer features, and pricing that still sits below the newest model years. They also give you more listings to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim and condition.
What is the Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $51,481 | −6.47% |
| 2021 | $37,222 | −4.3% |
| 2022 | $39,820 | −3.93% |
| 2014 | $20,710 | −3.47% |
| 2019 | $32,113 | −3.01% |
| 2018 | $29,334 | −2.91% |
| 2017 | $27,117 | −2.41% |
| 2016 | $24,375 | −2.4% |
| 2015 | $21,957 | −2.1% |
| 2023 | $44,450 | −1.58% |
| 2020 | $35,878 | −0.93% |
| 2024 | $46,752 | +3.38% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. A few years are falling more noticeably than others, while one recent year is moving up. Overall, the pattern favors buyers who want to wait for the right deal rather than rush into the first listing they see.
The 2020 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2024, 2020, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Overall, owners consistently praise the Toyota 4Runner for its reliability, off-road capabilities, and comfort across all model years. Many drivers appreciate its spacious interior and robust performance, making it a popular choice for families and adventurous driving alike. Outstanding car for adventuring and commuting in the city, easier to drive and park than a full sized truck.

In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

Toyota 4Runner test drive
overall

The old-school SUV connotes adventure, and the 2026 Toyota 4Runner is here to serve that purpose.
Shoppers looking for an old-school SUV should be careful what they wish for, because the 4Runner makes compromises in passenger comfort and interior space to make it one of the better off-roaders on the market. It’s offered as a hybrid, but fuel economy is never as good as a typical crossover SUVs, which will be more comfortable and more affordable. That makes mainstream crossovers better choices for most, but for those who want adventure while carrying passengers, the 4Runner makes sense.
Verdict: The 4Runner’s closest rivals are the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco. Compared to them, the 4Runner can carry more passengers and offers better fuel economy thanks to an available hybrid powertrain. If adventure is a priority, then the 4Runner is a great choice, but those who want a five- or seven-passenger SUV for daily family duty would be better off with a crossover.
