The founder of Ineos, a British chemicals company, formed Ineos Automotive in 2017 to develop a “spiritual successor” to the old-school Land Rover Defender. The result is the Grenadier, a beefy off-road SUV with BMW powertrains, boxy styling, and a plucky British attitude. ## What’s New for the 2024 Ineos Grenadier The Ineos Grenadier is an all-new model for 2024, and the automaker plans to release a pickup truck soon. ## Design The Grenadier’s design achieves the company’s goal of creating a new version of the old Land Rover Defender. Round headlights, an upright grille, and a super boxy shape give it a legitimate old-school off-roader look, and the SUV offers large skylights to let more light into the cabin. ## Powertrain Ineos borrowed BMW powertrains for the Grenadier, and the standard engine in the US is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six making 292 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual override, and the SUV delivers advanced four-wheel drive (4WD). Ineos employed a full box-sectioned ladder frame, beam axles, heavy-duty coil suspension, a center differential lock, and a two-speed transfer case to give the Grenadier its imposing off-road capability. ## Interior The Grenadier is available with a surprising number of interior options for a first-year SUV. The standard Utility trim gets Recaro seats with cloth and vinyl upholstery for easy cleaning. The $2,000 leather trim keeps the Recaros but adds grained leather and heated front seats. Heated seats, seat covers, and carpeted flooring are available. With five seats, the Grenadier isn’t the best family hauler, but higher configurations add luxury touches like skylights and nicer interior finishes that give it a more premium feel. ## Technology Ineos equips a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto. Since the SUV runs BMW powertrains, its infotainment system comes directly from Bavaria, which means a rotary controller for the display and BMW iDrive functions. SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and several USB ports also come standard, and Ineos equips a switch panel that can be wired for auxiliary lights and other features. ## Safety The Grenadier hasn’t been crash-tested yet, but it gets a generous suite of advanced driver aids. The list includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, driver-drowsiness detection, automatic hazard lights, uphill and downhill assist, and electronic stability control. Front and rear parking assistance is also standard. ## Pricing As of this writing, the 2024 Ineos Grenadier starts at $71,500. Stepping up to the more luxurious and capable Trialmaster Edition or Fieldmaster Edition pushes the starting price to $79,190. Ineos offers a huge number of options and upgrades that can quickly drive those prices higher, and the more expensive configurations still require added-cost options to get leather and other upscale interior features.
