Is the Honda Odyssey a good car?
Yes — the Honda Odyssey is a strong choice if you want a family-focused minivan with broad owner appeal and a long record of comfort and practicality. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Odyssey for its spacious cabin, comfortable seating, and family-friendly versatility. They also highlight its easy-to-live-with layout and strong safety focus, which make it especially appealing for daily family use.
Expert reviews rate the 2014 and 2016 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on fuel economy, technology that feels dated in some years, and value that can be harder to justify when newer rivals add more equipment. Still, if you want a minivan that emphasizes comfort, space, and everyday usability, the Odyssey remains a compelling pick.
31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Honda Odyssey models reliable?

- Owners rate the Honda Odyssey between 4.5 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-documented example with a clean history and a careful pre-purchase inspection.
What should I look for when buying a used Honda Odyssey?
Across all model years, at 71.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 90.5% |
| 2025 | 88.5% |
| 2024 | 85.4% |
| 2023 | 79.7% |
| 2022 | 73.5% |
| 2021 | 65.7% |
| 2020 | 61.8% |
| 2019 | 60.7% |
| 2018 | 59.9% |
| 2017 | 58.3% |
| 2016 | 55.9% |
| 2015 | 56% |
| 2014 | 56.5% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2023 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing
- Infotainment: a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and wireless smartphone charging
- Fuel efficiency: According to the EPA, the 2025 Odyssey should get 22 mpg in combined driving. Our test vehicle returned 21.4 mpg on the evaluation loop and averaged 24 mpg during a week of travel that included an eight-hour round-trip drive from the far northwestern reaches of the Los Angeles suburbs to downtown San Diego.
Which Honda Odyssey trim should I buy?
The 2025 Honda Odyssey offers these trims:
- EX-L: The entry point for 2025, this trim gives you the Odyssey’s core family-friendly layout and the model’s easygoing, practical character.
- Sport-L: Adds a sportier appearance and sits above EX-L for shoppers who want a more distinctive look.
- Touring: Adds CabinWatch, a rear entertainment setup, and front and rear parking sensors, making it a strong choice if you want more convenience and family tech.
- Elite: The top trim adds the most upscale equipment and finishes, including the most premium presentation in the lineup.
What Honda Odyssey do most buyers choose?
The Honda Odyssey years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 4,203 | 34% |
| 2025 | 3,888 | 34.1% |
| 2023 | 2,760 | 32.9% |
| 2019 | 2,683 | 32.8% |
| 2026 | 2,616 | 34.4% |
| 2018 | 2,312 | 32.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare and a wider spread of prices and conditions. That usually makes it easier to find a version that fits your budget and feature priorities.
What is the Honda Odyssey's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $35,234 | −17.19% |
| 2022 | $28,266 | −10.78% |
| 2023 | $32,540 | −10.35% |
| 2020 | $23,613 | −9.28% |
| 2019 | $21,203 | −8.38% |
| 2017 | $15,556 | −8.03% |
| 2014 | $10,427 | −7.99% |
| 2018 | $19,350 | −7.97% |
| 2024 | $35,116 | −7.93% |
| 2021 | $25,961 | −6.1% |
| 2016 | $13,813 | −4.59% |
| 2015 | $12,447 | −2.23% |
Most Odyssey model years are down year over year, and several recent ones show double-digit declines. That creates a friendlier buying environment if you want a used minivan with room to negotiate. The smaller declines on older model years suggest those versions have been moving more steadily than the newer ones.
The 2015, 2016, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Honda Odyssey safe?
- 2025: 6/10
- 2022: 8/10
- 2021: 9/10
- 2018: 9/10
- 2016: 9/10
- 2015: 10/10
- 2014: 10/10
Every 2025 Odyssey has Honda Sensing, a collection of driving-assistance systems.
For the safest used buy, the 2014 and 2015 models both post the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Honda Odyssey now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −17.19% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.93%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 34.1% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 34%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $35,116. The Honda Odyssey offers a spacious cabin, comfortable seating, and a practical family-first layout that make it easy to live with.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Under its stubby hood, you’ll find a tried-and-true 3.5-liter V6 engine making 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission delivers that motive force to the Odyssey’s front wheels.
- Tech: A new 7-inch digital driver display pairs with an analog speedometer, and the minivan adds a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a faster processor for quicker response to inputs. In addition, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and wireless smartphone charging are now standard.
- Safety: Every 2025 Odyssey has Honda Sensing, a collection of driving-assistance systems. Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Starting price: For 2025, the Odyssey comes in EX-L, Sport-L, Touring, and Elite trim levels. With the departure of the base EX trim, the most affordable version of the Odyssey jumps higher in price, to $42,220 from $38,240 for last year’s EX model.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

So far so good! A lot of bells and whistles that were not used to. It handles really well and our kids are happy exploring it. I just wish the acceleration was a little better for turning into traffic. Hope to keep this car for a long time.

Honda Odyssey test drive
overall
Minivans like the 2025 Honda Odyssey are perfect for family life, but this one is falling behind its rivals.
Honda hasn’t redesigned the Odyssey since 2018, but this minivan does get a few updates that will appeal to the Odyssey faithful. They include subtle styling changes, a new 7-inch digital driver display, an updated 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, modernized USB-C charging ports, and a smartphone charging pad. A new Amazon Fire TV rear-seat entertainment system also arrives for 2025. While appreciated, these improvements don’t rescue the Odyssey from its increasingly uncompetitive position.
Verdict: The 2025 Odyssey doesn’t offer a hybrid powertrain or an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option. The updated tech merely meets minimum standards and expectations. And in a new crash-test evaluation, Honda’s minivan earns a rare low rating. Certainly, the Odyssey remains comfortable, exceptionally practical, and enjoyable to drive. But it needs a redesign, and soon.
