In only its second year on the market, the 2020 Genesis G70 is getting ample attention as a sport sedan, though it receives few changes.
The G70 is available with a combination of powertrains and equipment packages that serve to make its abundant features and pricing structure confusing. But, like in 2019, three powertrains are available in the US: 2.0T, 2.0T with a 6-speed manual, and 3.3T. Either of the G70's engines can be coupled to rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0T can also be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels. The G70’s base engine, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, produces 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 is rated at 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque.
For 2020 the G70 starts at $35,450, not including destination, for a RWD 2.0T. Adding the manual transmission, strangely, costs more, but also provides a host of performance upgrades like 19-inch wheels with summer tires, a livelier exhaust system, Brembo brakes, and a limited-slip differential, which helps more evenly distribute torque to the drive wheels. AWD adds an additional $2,000 to any automatic-transmission-equipped G70. A fully loaded 3.3T AWD trim will run up a $53,665 tally.
Genesis made only three changes to the G70 for 2020: A power-operated trunk and upgraded brakes are available on the 3.3T Prestige Package and 2.0T Sport, respectively. All-season tires are now fitted to AWD models with the available 19-inch wheels.
The G70 is loaded with tech features: An 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while three USB ports (two front and one rear) are included. Every G70 comes equipped with multiple drive modes, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and seven airbags. All V6-equipped G70s come with navigation, and opting for the top engine is the only way to get adjustable dampers, which come with the Sport trim.
Inside, the G70 matches the finishes offered by even its most luxurious competitors. Opting for the highest trims will yield a G70 with quilted Nappa leather complete with either red or grey stitching.
Like every Genesis model, the G70’s primary gambit is value. Across the board the G70’s pricing offers more features for less money than its competitors—especially those from Germany. It comes with 3 years of scheduled maintenance and offers a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. It was also voted the 2019 North American Car of the Year, which is solid evidence that there’s more here than just a good deal.
