Overall, owners of the Ford Transit Passenger appreciate its spaciousness, comfort, and performance, especially with the turbocharged engine. Many find it ideal for large families and long trips due to its passenger capacity and features like dual air conditioning and rear cameras. The diesel option is also favored for better fuel economy. The Ford Transit is the best-selling commercial van, and it comes in several configurations. The Transit Passenger offers seating for up to 15 people across up to five rows, and it brings some of the most complete safety tech of any van in the model line. Ford recently released an electric Transit called E-Transit, but it is only available in Cargo, Cutaway, and Chassis Cab configurations.
Ford offers the Transit Passenger Van in XL and XLT trims. The base engine is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 275 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Also available is a turbocharged 3.5-liter engine that makes 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The Transit Passenger can tow up to 4,400 pounds when properly equipped.
Three roof heights are available: low, medium, and high. Ford offers long and extended lengths, a gross vehicle weight rating of up to 10,360 pounds, and single- or dual-rear wheels. Buyers can opt for fixed side windows or sliding glass, and the van is available with different door and seating configurations.
The Transit Passenger comes with rear climate vents and controls to accommodate additional people, and Ford offers upgraded audio systems with rear speakers. Several upfits are available for the Passenger body style, including four different seating configurations with various luggage racks and storage solutions. Buyers can opt for an interior luggage wall, exterior running boards, exterior graphics packages, and lighted signs for taxis or other transport service providers. Beyond factory-installed upfits, there’s a whole industry of van custom shops and parts manufacturers, making the Transit one of the most flexible vehicles on the road.
The Transit comes standard with a 4-inch display, Bluetooth, and USB inputs. Ford offers upgrades, including a 12-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, and more. Some of the audio upgrades include additional safety equipment, such as adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and intelligent speed assist. Buyers can also add upgraded fuses and electrical panels, an upfitter interface with switches for power equipment, a rear compartment lighting system, dual alternators, a backup alarm system, and an intelligent access system with push-button start.
Ford equips a decent list of standard safety gear, including a pre-collision system with automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, automatic high beams, and lane-keeping assist. Available safety kit includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, and a front/rear split-view camera system. Commercial vehicles aren’t required to submit to crash test and fuel economy ratings, so the Transit doesn’t have any publicly available safety data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
