The main trade-offs in the newer expert-reviewed years center on rear-seat space, cargo room, and cabin noise, along with some build-quality and transmission concerns in certain model years.
30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Ford Mustang models reliable?
Owners consistently rate the Mustang highly, and the recurring praise centers on its performance, styling, and driving enjoyment. Expert feedback also reinforces that appeal with strong marks for the car’s character and everyday usability.
- Owners rate the Ford Mustang between 4.42 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-kept example with a clean history and documented maintenance, especially on older model years.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, at 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93% |
| 2025 | 91.2% |
| 2024 | 89.1% |
| 2023 | 85.6% |
| 2022 | 76.3% |
| 2021 | 72.1% |
| 2020 | 67.8% |
| 2019 | 64.1% |
| 2018 | 60.3% |
| 2017 | 54.8% |
| 2016 | 54.8% |
| 2015 | 55.8% |
| 2014 | 58.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: the entry engine brings the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 10-speed automatic, and the 13.2-inch touchscreen with Sync 4; it’s the best-value choice if you want the Mustang experience at the lowest starting point.
- GT: adds the 5.0-liter V8, a six-speed manual, and a much stronger muscle-car character for buyers who want the classic Mustang formula.
- Dark Horse: sits at the top of the range with 500 hp and additional performance enhancements for shoppers who want the most serious factory performance.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 3,214 | 34.2% |
| 2024 | 3,107 | 35.1% |
| 2023 | 2,751 | 34.4% |
| 2020 | 2,227 | 33.9% |
| 2021 | 2,146 | 33.3% |
| 2019 | 2,059 | 34.2% |
Higher-volume model years tend to draw more shoppers because they offer a wider selection of listings and more price points to compare. That usually makes it easier to find the right combination of condition, equipment, and value.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2016 | $19,063 | −4.46% |
| 2017 | $21,318 | −4.39% |
| 2019 | $26,290 | −3.31% |

| 2014 | $15,689 | +4.65% |
| 2023 | $33,105 | +9.49% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want more room to negotiate. A few years are rising instead, so the market is still rewarding certain versions with stronger pricing. The 2018 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2023, 2014, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Customers say
Overall, the Ford Mustang consistently impresses drivers with its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and iconic styling throughout the years. Owners frequently praise the exhilarating acceleration, handling, and variety of engine options. The thrilling sound of the V8 engines adds to the driving enjoyment. However, some drivers express concerns about limited backseat space and fuel economy, as well as occasional issues with reliability and build quality in older models. Despite these drawbacks, the Mustang is often celebrated as a beloved classic that offers both excitement and nostalgia.

One of the few cars yet available with a manual transmission. Gotta love the V8. Imho, UI for all the tech could be a bit more intuitive and easy to use but, some of this is my need to learn it. Sure wish they still provided a printed owners manual.
