| 2025 | 94.4% |

Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: CoPilot 360+ on Active models; CoPilot 360 2.0 on higher trim levels
- Infotainment: 13.2-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity
- Fuel efficiency: The turbo-four engine returns an EPA-rated 24 mpg combined (20 mpg city; 29 mpg highway) with RWD and 23 mpg combined (20 mpg city; 27 mpg highway) with AWD. V6 models are rated at 21 mpg combined (18 mpg city; 25 mpg highway) with RWD and lose 1 mpg combined with AWD. Thanks to its all-terrain tires, the Tremor is rated at a lower 21 mpg combined (19 mpg city; 23 mpg highway) with the inline-four engine and 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city; 22 mpg highway) with the V6.
Which Ford Explorer trim should I buy?
The 2026 Ford Explorer offers these trims:
- Active: The base model starts the lineup with the standard 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, the CoPilot 360+ safety suite, and the 13.2-inch touchscreen with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. It’s the best-value choice if you want the core Explorer experience at the lowest starting price.
- ST-Line: This trim adds a more road-focused look with blacked-out exterior trim and larger wheels, while keeping the Explorer’s standard tech and safety features.
- Tremor: The Tremor is the off-road-focused trim, adding all-terrain tires, a raised ride height, off-road lights in the grille, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, off-road drive mode, and steel skid plates.
- Platinum: This is the most luxurious trim, with leather upholstery and a more upscale cabin presentation.
- ST: The ST adds the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6, sport-tuned suspension, and beefier brakes for buyers who want the strongest performance.
What Ford Explorer do most buyers choose?
The Ford Explorer years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 9,719 | 29.7% |
| 2023 | 9,688 | 29.7% |
| 2022 | 9,677 | 29.3% |
| 2021 | 8,195 | 29.2% |
| 2020 | 6,083 | 28.3% |
| 2025 | 5,912 | 29.8% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, more pricing competition, and a broader mix of trims and equipment. That usually makes it easier to find the right combination of features, mileage, and price.
What is the Ford Explorer's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | $16,985 | −11.78% |
| 2022 | $28,347 | −11.29% |
| 2021 | $24,120 | −10.87% |
| 2020 | $22,283 | −10.04% |
| 2018 | $15,699 | −9.81% |
| 2025 | $41,059 | −9.64% |
| 2016 | $12,263 | −8.95% |
| 2015 | $10,485 | −8.04% |
| 2017 | $13,764 | −8.02% |
| 2014 | $9,551 | −6.59% |
| 2023 | $32,250 | −4.9% |
| 2024 | $35,078 | +0.83% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which creates opportunities for used buyers looking for better value. A few newer years are moving less sharply, and one recent year is slightly up, so the pattern is not uniform across the lineup. The 2024 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year. The 2024, 2023, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Ford Explorer safe?
- 2026: 10/10
- 2025: 9/10
- 2022: 10/10
- 2021: 9/10
- 2020: 8/10
- 2016: 5/10
The 2026 Explorer includes the CoPilot 360+ safety suite on Active models, with higher trim levels adding CoPilot 360 2.0. For the safest used buy, the 2022 and 2026 models both post the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Ford Explorer now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −9.64% versus a year ago, and the 2023 model is at −4.9%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 29.8% good and great deals, and the 2023 model has 29.7%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $35,078. The Ford Explorer offers roomy three-row practicality and a versatile cabin that works well for families.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Powertrain options are unchanged for 2026. The standard 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Overview

Ford has refreshed the Explorer for 2025. Although the trim lineup has been reduced to four options, the Explorer still comes with a choice of engines and drivetrains.
What’s New for 2025
The refresh brings a new front end along with other, subtle exterior design tweaks. An updated interior is highlighted by a standard 13.2-inch touchscreen running the new Ford Digital Experience software, and BlueCruise hands-free driving technology is now available.
Design
A new front fascia with a wide and tall grille, LED headlamps, and larger, lower air intakes help differentiate the 2025 Ford Explorer from earlier model years. Ford has trimmed down the trim lineup to just Active, ST-Line, Platinum, and ST, with each option featuring some unique design features. On the Platinum, ST, and ST-Line trim levels, a new black-painted roof option gives the Explorer a sportier vibe.
At the rear, the new LED taillamps reach from the corners toward the middle of the liftgate. Otherwise, the Explorer is the same, familiar three-row SUV we’ve come to know. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 21 inches, and the performance-oriented ST trim swaps in an even more imposing grille.
Powertrain
Most Explorers–and every Active and ST-Line trim–will employ a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. With 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque (when burning premium fuel), this base engine should be powerful enough to motivate the big Ford, although speed demons will undoubtedly want the 3.0-liter turobcharged V6 equipped in the ST and available in the Platinum trim. That powerplant churns out 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque (again, when running on premium fuel). Both engines can be equipped with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or available four-wheel drive (4WD), and both pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Interior
The redesigned interior strives for more comfort and higher-quality look and feel. A large touchscreen takes center stage, but a bevy of cubbies and cupholders throughout the cabin make this new Explorer particularly practical. Each trim level can be equipped with unique appointments, from bronze accent stitching in the base Active trim to Mojave Dusk leather upholstery on the Platinum trim. Explorer Platinum and ST models come standard with seven selectable ambient light choices; the array is also available as an option on the ST-Line.
Technology
A 13.2-inch center touchscreen is included as standard equipment, and it runs the new Ford Digital Experience infotainment software. With Alexa and Google Built-in, the new Explorer can run Google Maps and provides Google Assistant as the default voice assistant. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also included.
Safety
Newly available for 2025, Ford BlueCruise headlines the 2025 Ford Explorer’s safety options. BlueCruise–equipped on a 90-day trial for ST-Line, ST, and Platinum trims–allows for semi-autonomous driving on pre-approved stretches of road. Beyond its 90-day trial, BlueCruise is available via a three-year subscription plan.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, exit warning, and a lane-keeping assist system, all included as part of the Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ suite of features. Further optional equipment includes a 360-degree surround-view camera, front parking sensors, hill-descent control, and rain-sensing front wipers.
Pricing
The 2025 Ford Explorer Active starts at $41,865, including the $645 acquisition fee and $1,595 destination fee. The ST-Line carries an MSRP of $46,625, the Platinum is $53,765, and the ST costs $57,445–again, all numbers inclusive of acquisition and destination fees. This represents a jump from the 2024 Explorer, which opened with a $39,100 MSRP in base trim. However, the Explorer also comes better equipped in 2025, as that base trim is no longer available.
