Chevrolet is taking a rapid-fire approach to launching new electric vehicles (EVs) in 2022. The automaker debuted the Silverado EV and Blazer EV earlier this year, and now there’s another model to discuss: Chevy just announced the 2024 Equinox EV, an affordable, spacious crossover with up to 300 miles of range.

The Equinox EV will start at around $30,000, making it one of the most affordable new electric models to date. Remember that Tesla promised similar pricing for the Model 3 before abandoning that strategy and increasing prices across the board. If Chevy and GM can pull it off, the Equinox EV may be one of the catalysts the market needs for mass EV adoption.

At launch, five trims will be available: 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 2RS, and 3RS. The LT models are more subdued and focus on comfort over sportiness, while the RS models have more aggressive styling, such as red accents and an available full-red interior.

The base 1LT trim gets an estimated 210 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. An all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain is available that delivers 290 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. The SUV’s driving range starts at 250 miles for the 1LT with front-wheel drive (FWD) and climbs to 300 miles with optional equipment. Owners can take advantage of GM’s Ultium Charge 360, which offers access to more than 110,000 public chargers across the United States.

Level 2 AC charging at 11.5 kW comes standard, which Chevy says adds up to 34 miles of range per hour. The 3RS eAWD is available with a 19.2 kW Level 2 charging system, which can replenish up to 51 miles of range per hour. All models get DC fast charging capabilities and can recover 70 miles of range in as little as ten minutes. Like most EVs, the Equinox has regenerative braking and one-pedal driving capabilities.

An 11-inch touchscreen and an 11-inch configurable digital gauge cluster are standard. Navigation is standard and offers route planning that accounts for distances and charging times. A massive 17.7-inch display becomes available starting with the 2LT trim, and Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free highway driving system, is available beginning with the 2RS model.

The Equinox EV is too new to have available crash test data and too different from the gas model for us to draw conclusions about how it would perform in testing. That said, Chevy equips the SUV with a load of standard safety equipment, and makes advanced tech, like Super Cruise, available as well. All Equinox EVs come with Chevy Safety Assist, which brings automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alerts, lane-keep assist, front pedestrian braking, and automatic high beams. Other standard driver aids include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, reverse automatic braking, rear parking assist, and blind zone steering assist.
