Like most major automakers, BMW is going electric, and the luxury brand is hard at work releasing new models and updating existing vehicles. SUVs are a significant part of the lineup, so it’s no surprise to see a new electric utility vehicle from BMW. The iX is a midsize SUV with seating for five, solid all-electric range, and an upscale price tag. BMW offers the vehicle in two main configurations for 2023: iX xDrive 50 and iX M60.

The iX isn’t far off from BMW’s long-running X5 in terms of size and usable space, but its all-electric powertrain places it a world away from the legacy SUVs. The base xDrive50 comes with two electric motors that make a combined 516 horsepower. The setup delivers standard all-wheel drive and a 0-60 mph time of just 4.0 seconds. If that’s not quick enough, BMW offers a performance model in the iX M60. It also gets a pair of electric motors, but they’re cranked up to produce 610 horsepower, which should cut more than half a second off the xDrive50’s already impressive time.

BMW offers performance upgrades for many of its vehicles, including entry-level trims and EVs. The iX is no different, as the automaker offers an adaptive air suspension upgrade and a rear-wheel steering system for the base xDrive50 SUV. The M60 comes standard with these features, which, together, improve handling and ride quality.

The iX comes standard with a 105.2-kWh battery that delivers a range of up to 324 miles in the xDrive50 and up to 280 miles in the M60. The SUV can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes on DC fast charging, and buyers get two years of complimentary charging through BMW’s partnership with Electrify America. The arrangement allows free 30-minute charging sessions at any of the company’s charging stations in the United States.

As an electric vehicle, the iX is already more sustainable than a gas-powered car, and BMW focused on using responsibly sourced materials throughout. The wood used in the cabin is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and the floor mats are made of a nylon created from recycled ocean waste. The SUV is assembled in BMW’s Dingolfing plant, which uses 100 percent renewable energy.

The BMW iX is on sale now. The base iX xDrive50 starts at $83,200, and the iX M60 starts at $108,900. Both models will see a $995 destination fee tacked on at the bottom line. Those aren’t wimpy prices by any means, but BMW offers several options that can push the numbers even higher: The $2,300 convenience package brings a head-up display and augmented reality for the navigation system, while the $4,000 Premium pack adds those features plus a Harman Kardon sound system, a surround-view camera, an interior camera system, a personal embedded SIM (eSIM), and multi-function seats with massage. Other packages include a $1,600 handling pack and a $1,150 luxury package.
