The BMW X5's current nationwide average price is $41,921, and its year-round low is $36,696.31. That puts the model's pricing in a broad band that shifts meaningfully by model year, with newer versions commanding the highest averages. Recently, prices have come down for the 2024, 2025, and 2026 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the BMW X5 is a strong pick if you want a luxury SUV that blends comfort, performance, and technology. The all-generations owner rating is 4.57/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the X5 for its luxurious interior, smooth driving experience, and strong performance. They also consistently highlight its advanced technology and comfortable ride, which help make it a popular choice among luxury SUV shoppers.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2014 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on value, fuel economy, and the way some advanced safety features are packaged. Recent expert coverage also points to a relatively high price, complex option structure, and safety tech that requires upgrades on some versions.
34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW X5 models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the X5 as comfortable, refined, and enjoyable to drive, with strong performance and a high-quality interior coming up again and again. Expert coverage also reinforces the model's polished driving character and well-rounded feel.
- Owners rate the BMW X5 between 4.35 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk tends to center on maintenance costs and the complexity of higher-optioned models, so a careful pre-purchase inspection and service-history review are especially worthwhile.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW X5?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2027 | 98.5% |
| 2026 | 97.4% |
| 2025 | 95.8% |
| 2024 | 92.3% |

| 2020 | 80.6% |
| 2019 | 75.2% |

| 2017 | 62.7% |
| 2016 | 62.1% |
| 2015 | 62.6% |

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2019 models.

What BMW X5 do most buyers choose?
The BMW X5 years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 5,109 | 34.5% |
| 2023 | 3,853 | 36.1% |
| 2024 | 3,803 | 36.2% |
| 2026 | 3,335 | 33.7% |
| 2022 | 2,818 | 36.2% |
| 2027 | 2,424 | 32.5% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right mileage, color, and equipment mix. They also sit in the part of the lineup where newer features and broader availability often overlap.
What is the BMW X5's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2021 | $32,965 | −12.16% |
| 2023 | $42,887 | −11.98% |
| 2019 | $25,689 | −11.98% |
| 2017 | $15,524 | −11.52% |
| 2020 | $28,333 | −11.38% |
| 2016 | $14,243 | −10.08% |
| 2014 | $11,888 | −9.94% |
| 2025 | $62,134 | −9.75% |
| 2015 | $12,914 | −9.25% |
| 2026 | $72,133 | −8.27% |
| 2024 | $53,961 | −7.38% |
The table shows broad year-over-year price declines across the lineup, which can work in your favor if you're shopping used. The biggest drops are concentrated in older and mid-cycle model years, while newer models are falling by smaller amounts. That creates a useful spread of value depending on how recent you want your X5 to be.
The 2024, 2026, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

The SUV exceeds our expectations. From comfort to safety to style this BMW hit all points! My wife loves the sensors around the vehicle making her aware of any obstacles before incident. Overall this was our number one choice and happy with it. We also looked at the XC90, Grand Cherokee, GV80.

BMW X5 this is a very good premium crossover, I think this car loses a lot of value in the first year and then the price stays the same, it's a very decent car!

Great car with so many features. Some of the features I liked the most are Hands free driving ( Driver Assistant plus), record the parking route and replay it later for auto parking, using my phone and apple watch as a key so no need to carry physical key, live view of the car from your smartphone and so on. 46 miles of electric range and 3 different driving modes - sports, hybrid and electric makes this car one of the best cars I drove.

The 2024 BMW X5 is a refined and versatile midsize luxury SUV. It boasts sharp handling, energetic powertrains, and modern in-car and safety tech.
What’s New for the 2024 BMW X5
The X5 receives a mild styling update for 2024, and the xDrive45e has been replaced with the xDrive50e as the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. The X5 also features updated infotainment and a new hands-free highway driving system.
Design
The X5 features a freshened grille, headlights, and taillights. BMW also offers new wheel designs. Trims for the X5 include the sDrive40i, xDrive50i, xDrive50e, and M60i variants. The M60i stands out with more aggressive bodywork, a black grille, and black exterior trim.
Powertrain
The base powertrain in the X5 is found in the sDrive40i. It’s a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that makes 375 horsepower. Power is routed to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The xDrive40i adds all-wheel drive (AWD).
The X5 is also offered in a plug-in hybrid variant, called the xDrive50e. It uses the same twin-turbo inline-six, working with an electric motor to put out a combined 483 horsepower. It has an electric driving range of 39 miles.
The X5 M60i boasts a twin-turbocharged V8 engine that develops 523 horsepower and 553 horsepower. This sporty variant can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. If the M60i doesn’t quench your need for speed, BMW offers the high-performance X5 M (treated as a separate model).
The X5 sDrive40i and sDrive40i both return 23 mpg city, 27 highway, and 25 combined. The X5 M60i returns 17 mpg city, 22 highway, and 19 combined.
The most efficient version of the X5 is the xDrive50e, which returns 58 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent). The BMW X5 requires premium fuel.
Interior
The standard upholstery in the X5 is synthetic leather, and it’s available with premium genuine leather upholstery. Standard features include power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and a panoramic moonroof. With the rear seats folded, the X5 provides up to 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space, accessed via a helpful split-fold tailgate.
Technology
The 2024 X5 comes standard with a new curved bezel that commands the dash. It houses a fully digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. It runs the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The iDrive system can also be operated by a rotary dial in the center console.
Safety
Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. It also comes with front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. BMW also offers the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature as an option.
Pricing
At the time of this writing, the 2023 BMW X5 starts at $65,200 for the sDrive40i. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) xDrive40i starts at $67,500. The xDrive50e starts at $72,500, and the X5 M60i starts at $89,300. The BMW X5 is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
