Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Active Driving Assistant with lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning; Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Highway Assistant.
- Infotainment: curved dashboard display with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen running BMW Operating System 8, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: Six-cylinder X5 models are EPA-rated at 25 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 27 mpg highway) whether you choose RWD or AWD. Fuel economy drops to 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city 22 mpg highway) for the V8-engined M60i and 15 mpg combined (13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway) for the high-performance X5 M Competition.
Which BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2025 BMW X5 offers...
- X5 sDrive40i: The rear-wheel-drive entry point gives you the turbocharged inline-six, eight-speed automatic, and the core X5 driving feel at the lowest starting price. It is the best-value choice if you want the X5 experience without moving up the lineup.
- X5 xDrive40i: This all-wheel-drive version adds AWD traction while keeping the same inline-six powertrain and balanced everyday character.
- X5 xDrive50e: This plug-in hybrid adds the electric motor and battery pack, plus 39 miles of all-electric range and standard air suspension, making it the pick for shoppers who want efficiency and extra refinement.
- X5 M60i xDrive: This V8 model adds 523 hp, 553 lb-ft of torque, and a quicker 0-60 mph time, making it the choice for buyers who want the strongest straight-line performance.
- X5 M Competition: This top performance trim adds a 617-hp twin-turbo V8 and the most extreme acceleration in the lineup.
What BMW X5 do most buyers choose?
The BMW X5 years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 4,747 | 34.1% |
| 2023 | 3,686 | 35.6% |
| 2024 | 3,631 | 36.2% |
| 2026 | 3,110 | 33.1% |
| 2022 | 2,737 | 35.7% |
| 2021 | 2,238 | 35% |
These higher-volume years tend to draw the most attention because they give you more inventory to compare and more chances to find the right color, mileage, and equipment mix. They also sit close enough to the newest models to keep the X5's modern tech and luxury appeal front and center.
What is the BMW X5's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $38,003 | −14.6% |
| 2018 | $17,843 | −13.53% |
| 2021 | $33,115 | −12.13% |
| 2019 | $26,090 | −11.27% |
| 2020 | $28,543 | −10.71% |
| 2023 | $43,473 | −10.53% |
| 2017 | $15,828 | −10.43% |
| 2025 | $62,296 | −10.12% |
| 2014 | $11,904 | −10.12% |
| 2016 | $14,312 | −9.27% |
| 2026 | $72,007 | −9.15% |
| 2015 | $13,030 | −8.32% |
| 2024 | $54,409 | −7.79% |
The table shows broad price declines across the lineup, which can work in your favor if you're shopping used. Most model years are down by double digits, so there are meaningful savings available compared with a year ago. The newer models are also seeing declines, which can make recent X5s especially attractive if you want modern features without paying new-car pricing.
The 2024, 2015, and 2026 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

The SUV exceeds our expectations. From comfort to safety to style this BMW hit all points! My wife loves the sensors around the vehicle making her aware of any obstacles before incident. Overall this was our number one choice and happy with it. We also looked at the XC90, Grand Cherokee, GV80.

BMW X5 this is a very good premium crossover, I think this car loses a lot of value in the first year and then the price stays the same, it's a very decent car!

Great car with so many features. Some of the features I liked the most are Hands free driving ( Driver Assistant plus), record the parking route and replay it later for auto parking, using my phone and apple watch as a key so no need to carry physical key, live view of the car from your smartphone and so on. 46 miles of electric range and 3 different driving modes - sports, hybrid and electric makes this car one of the best cars I drove.

BMW’s first SUV remains an integral part of the luxury brand’s lineup.
The 2025 BMW X5 is the automaker’s midsize luxury SUV, positioned between the X3 and X7, and alongside the coupe-like X6. That puts it in a well-populated segment alongside SUVs like the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Genesis GV80, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Porsche Cayenne, and Volvo XC90. Following a substantial update for the 2024 model year, the X5 celebrates its 25th anniversary with a limited-edition model, but receives no other changes.
Verdict: The latest version of the X5 isn’t the best value, but it explains this SUV’s longevity.
