You can find sleek and elegant style mixed with high-end performance in any 6 series from Plant Dingolfing, BMW’s 6 Series factory. But if you want to find the fastest BMW with some unique dabs of style, wait the extra two weeks for that four-door coupe to be retuned at the Alpina factory in Buchloe, Germany, and take a look at the 2016 BMW Alpina B6.
The speed-driven engineers in Buchloe reworked the fuel supply system, air-intake ducts and air-filter housing on the B6’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 to produce a 60 horsepower increase over last year’s model, bringing the total hp to a mind-boggling 600. The V8 also produces 590 lb-ft of torque that pushes the Gran Coupe from 0-60 mph in a scant 3.6 seconds. BMW’s critically-acclaimed xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system doles out all that power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Alpina partnered with ZF to to develop this transmission, which has sequential shift buttons mounted on the rear of the steering wheel.
Not only does the B6 excel in acceleration and driving in straight lines (it has an electronically limited top speed of 200 mph), but Alpina made sure the B6 can handle curves as well. The re-tuned suspension makes use of stiffer springs and a larger front wheel chamber to improve handling. And Alpina’s sport suspension makes full use of BMW’s Adaptive Drive and Dynamic Damper Control to lessen body roll, allow for shock absorber adjustments, and generally sharpen the B6’s overall driving dynamics. The Alpina-specific wheels help as well: 20-inch, 20-spoke alloy wheels that are 8.5 inches wide in the front and 10 inches wide in the rear. The B6 also comes with larger brake discs to cope with the vehicle's copious amounts of power.
There are a few other notable changes for the 2016 B6 in addition to the increase in horsepower. The signature BMW kidney grille has been slightly reshaped, the front spoiler takes on a more aggressive look, and the hood has a pair of new character lines that scream speed even when the car is standing still.
And the grille, front spoiler, and hood aren’t the only features that separate the B6 from other 6 series models. There are also Alpina’s trademark twin elliptical tail pipes, blue brake calipers, door sill trims with blue illuminated Alpina lettering, an LED lighting package, blue instrumentation, a sport steering wheel with hand-stitched Lavalina leather, a plaque denoting the Alpina production number, and wood trim in either Myrtle or Piano lacquer. The trademark tailpipes are part of a full stainless steel exhaust system with active valves that allow the driver to choose a quiet hum or a heart-revving growl.
The list of standard equipment aboard the B6 is impressive, as you might imagine, and frankly too long to list. Some noteworthy highlights include Nappa Leather upholstery and door trims, a leather instrument panel with contrast stitching, 20-way power and heated front seats, four-zone climate control, a titling glass panel moonroof, a rear view camera, Dynamic Cruise Control, a navigation system with a 10.2-inch high-resolution screen and 200 GB hard drive, and a 600-watt, 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with vehicle-specific equalizing.
The list of standard safety equipment is also extensive. It includes BMW’s Active Protection System (detects imminent accidents and automatically pre-tensions safety belts, closes windows and moonroof, and activates post-crash braking), impact sensor (disconnects alternator, fuel pump and starter from battery after impact), active knee protection, interlocking door anchoring (protects against door intrusion upon side impacts), adaptive brakelights, BMW Assist eCall, BMW Remote Services (includes stolen vehicle recovery and remote door unlock), tire pressure monitor, and the full complement of air bags.
