Customer summary
The BMW 7 Series stands out as a luxurious and powerful sedan, consistently praised for its sophisticated performance, comfortable ride, and upscale interior across all model years. Owners appreciate the robust engines, advanced technology, and spaciousness, which make it a joy for both city driving and long trips. The BMW 7 Series' current nationwide average price is $42,883, and its lowest point over the past year was $40,082. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the BMW 7 Series a good car?
Yes — the BMW 7 Series is a strong pick if you want a flagship sedan that blends luxury, comfort, and driving enjoyment. The all-generations owner rating is 4.5/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the spacious, luxurious cabin, the powerful and varied powertrains, and the comfortable ride. They also repeatedly highlight the model’s upscale feel and advanced technology, especially on long drives.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs center on complex infotainment, polarizing styling, and the uneven way the plug-in hybrid delivers power in daily driving. Those are the kinds of compromises you should weigh if you want the newest tech and the broadest feature set.
30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 7 Series models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the BMW 7 Series’ luxurious cabin, strong performance, and advanced technology as its biggest strengths. Across the model years, it also earns praise for comfort, spaciousness, and a refined driving experience.
- Owners rate the BMW 7 Series between 1 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk can be higher than average because the car’s complexity and premium equipment can make repairs and upkeep more expensive over time.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 7 Series?
Across all model years, at 74.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 96.3% |
| 2025 | 93.9% |
| 2024 | 90.1% |
| 2023 | 84.5% |
| 2022 | 81.9% |
| 2021 | 73.2% |
| 2020 | 69.7% |
| 2019 | 61.6% |
| 2018 | 59.5% |
| 2017 | 56.1% |
| 2016 | 60.4% |
| 2015 | 60.6% |
| 2014 | 61.9% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: BMW now offers a slate of standard active safety features, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Infotainment: a massive curved-screen display that melds a 12.3-inch driver's screen with a 14.9-inch infotainment display, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the 750e at 65 MPGe (electric) and 25 mpg (gas) combined, and the 740i and 760i are also quite efficient, delivering 28 mpg (or 27 with AWD) and 20 mpg combined, respectively, according to the EPA.
Which BMW 7 Series trim should I buy?
The 2024 BMW 7 Series offers these trims:
- 740i: the entry point with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive, and the core luxury and tech features; best for buyers who want the most accessible way into the lineup.
- 740i xDrive: adds BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive and is the best-value trim.
- 750e xDrive: adds the plug-in hybrid system with 483 hp, 516 lb-ft of torque, and the ability to drive on electric power for short trips; a good fit if you want electrification and strong acceleration.
- 760i: adds the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 536 hp, standard AWD, and the most vigorous driving experience, along with luxury options such as two-tone paint or Cashmere wool interior.
What BMW 7 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 7 Series years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 736 | 32.9% |
| 2022 | 673 | 32.2% |
| 2024 | 628 | 33.9% |
| 2025 | 621 | 31.7% |
| 2019 | 558 | 30.5% |
| 2021 | 542 | 30.3% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, pricing, and deal opportunities. They also sit close enough to the current generation to deliver the modern features many used luxury-sedan shoppers want.
What is the BMW 7 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $80,191 | −20.91% |
| 2024 | $67,192 | −16.08% |
| 2022 | $41,886 | −14.83% |
| 2023 | $60,797 | −14.71% |
| 2015 | $13,307 | −12.37% |
| 2019 | $23,720 | −11.27% |
| 2017 | $19,225 | −10.38% |
| 2018 | $22,339 | −10.07% |
| 2014 | $12,480 | −9.81% |
| 2020 | $31,290 | −9.54% |
| 2021 | $37,632 | −9.29% |
| 2016 | $17,674 | −8.29% |
The table shows broad year-over-year price declines across every model year listed. That pattern is good news if you’re shopping used, because it means many versions have become more affordable over the past year. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer model years, while the smaller declines are still meaningful but less severe.
The 2016, 2021, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Owners appreciate the robust engines, advanced technology, and spaciousness, which make it a joy for both city driving and long trips. However, many drivers express concerns about high maintenance costs, potential reliability issues, and the complexity of some interior features. Overall, the 7 Series is seen as a fantastic option for those seeking a combination of luxury and driving pleasure, though the ownership experience can be pricey.

Unfortunately, the front end re-style is not as attractive as the prior car (2020-2022) and the dash layout looks like a Mercedes. Think Ill be keeping my 2020 750i which is a fantastic car. One of the best Ive ever owned. As a frame of reference Ive had Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari and more. The 750i is the most serene ride ever.

It is a beautiful car with great feature s and amazing technology. The ride was great minus the little road noise but the great audio system take care of that. Its 4 out of 5 car aesthetically, and with its options and functions.

BMW 7 Series test drive
overall

The 7 Series is luxurious, fast, and efficient, but its complex systems and quirky styling aren't for everyone.
Redesigned for 2023, the 7 Series is BMW's full-size flagship sedan, arch-rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8, and newcomers like the Genesis G90. For 2024, BMW has added the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) 750e and lightly updated the infotainment system. Unfortunately, these additions don't change the 7 Series calculus. The 750e offers a boost in power and efficiency over the low-end 740i, but it costs more, has a disjointed driving personality, and quickly eats its electric charge. Despite the update, the car's digital systems remain frustratingly complex.
Verdict: The 2024 BMW 7 Series has lots to offer luxury buyers, including features like a rear-seat theatre and cashmere upholstery, plus performance and fuel efficiency that are often superior to most rivals, few of whom offer PHEV options. But the car's frustrating digital systems and controls undermine the experience.
