Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: BMW's standard active safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Infotainment: BMW's curved-screen setup pairs a 12.3-inch driver's screen with a 14.9-inch infotainment display, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the 750e at 65 MPGe (electric) and 25 mpg (gas) combined, and the 740i and 760i are also quite efficient, delivering 28 mpg (or 27 with AWD) and 20 mpg combined, respectively.
Which BMW 7 Series trim should I buy?
The 2024 BMW 7 Series offers these trims:
- 740i: The entry trim uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 375 horsepower and rear-wheel drive, and it suits you if you want the most accessible way into the lineup.
- 740i xDrive: This version adds BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive, and the source calls it the best value in the lineup.
- 750e xDrive: This plug-in hybrid adds 483 horsepower, 516 lb-ft of torque, and electric driving capability, making it a strong choice if you want more efficiency and extra punch.
- 760i: The V8 trim adds 536 hp, standard AWD, and the most vigorous driving experience, along with luxury options such as two-tone paint and Cashmere wool interior.
What BMW 7 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 7 Series years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 733 | 36.3% |
| 2022 | 667 | 35.1% |
| 2024 | 616 | 38.3% |
| 2025 | 608 | 35.7% |
| 2019 | 567 | 33.3% |
| 2021 | 556 | 33.5% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more choice, which can make it easier to compare trims, colors, and equipment. They also tend to be the years shoppers focus on most when balancing price, availability, and feature content.
What is the BMW 7 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $80,168 | −20.94% |
| 2024 | $66,439 | −17.31% |
| 2023 | $60,536 | −14.71% |
| 2022 | $41,846 | −14.69% |
| 2019 | $23,516 | −12.01% |
| 2015 | $13,377 | −11.69% |
| 2017 | $19,089 | −11.22% |
| 2018 | $22,274 | −11.11% |
| 2021 | $37,440 | −10.16% |
| 2020 | $31,008 | −9.9% |
| 2014 | $12,485 | −9.41% |
| 2016 | $17,704 | −7.44% |
Most model years are down sharply year over year, which creates better opportunities for used buyers. The newest models show the steepest drops, while older examples still continue to soften at a double-digit pace in many cases. That pattern points to strong value for shoppers who are willing to buy used instead of new.
The 2016, 2014, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the BMW 7 Series safe?
- 2024: 8/10
- 2023: 8/10
BMW now offers a slate of standard active safety features, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
For the safest used buy, the 2023 and 2024 models both post the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used BMW 7 Series now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −20.94% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −17.31%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.7% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 38.3%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $60,536. The BMW 7 Series offers a spacious, luxurious cabin with a strong technical edge.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: For 2024, BMW offers three potent powertrains in the 7 Series, including the 740i with 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and the 750e with 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: BMW's curved-screen setup pairs a 12.3-inch driver's screen with a 14.9-inch infotainment display, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: BMW now offers a slate of standard active safety features, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Starting price: For 2024, the BMW 7 Series starts at $97,395.
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Not feeling the automatic doors. I don't need my car to do that for me especially when I have to wait for it to open/close. The theater sceen looked like a must have but it is ridiculously large and blocks rearview mirror. I more thing to rattle.

Unfortunately, the front end re-style is not as attractive as the prior car (2020-2022) and the dash layout looks like a Mercedes. Think Ill be keeping my 2020 750i which is a fantastic car. One of the best Ive ever owned. As a frame of reference Ive had Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari and more. The 750i is the most serene ride ever.

It is a beautiful car with great feature s and amazing technology. The ride was great minus the little road noise but the great audio system take care of that. Its 4 out of 5 car aesthetically, and with its options and functions.

BMW 7 Series test drive
overall

The 7 Series is luxurious, fast, and efficient, but its complex systems and quirky styling aren't for everyone.
Redesigned for 2023, the 7 Series is BMW's full-size flagship sedan, arch-rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8, and newcomers like the Genesis G90. For 2024, BMW has added the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) 750e and lightly updated the infotainment system. Unfortunately, these additions don't change the 7 Series calculus. The 750e offers a boost in power and efficiency over the low-end 740i, but it costs more, has a disjointed driving personality, and quickly eats its electric charge. Despite the update, the car's digital systems remain frustratingly complex.
Verdict: The 2024 BMW 7 Series has lots to offer luxury buyers, including features like a rear-seat theatre and cashmere upholstery, plus performance and fuel efficiency that are often superior to most rivals, few of whom offer PHEV options. But the car's frustrating digital systems and controls undermine the experience.
