The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo arrived in 2014 as a new alternative in an already successful lineup. There’s almost 4 inches of legroom over the regular 3 Series, increased height, and a liftgate in place of the trunk, making this a liftback. For 2019, the model carries over.

BMW offers the 3 Series Gran Turismo in two basic variants. There’s the 330i xDrive, which employs a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine, making 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. With this engine, the 3 Series Gran Turismo zips to 60 miles per hour in a reasonable 5.9 seconds. But the available 340i xDrive comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine that packs a bigger punch: 320 hp and 330 lb-ft, plus a run to 60 mph of only 4.7 seconds. Fuel economy for the 330i xDrive is rated at 23 miles per gallon city, 33 highway, and 27 combined, versus 20, 29, and 23 for the 340i xDrive. Whichever model you choose, you’ll get an 8-speed automatic transmission, start-stop technology that pauses the engine during traffic stops to save fuel, and BMW’s “xDrive,” its all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, standard.

The 3 Series Gran Turismo is split into Sport Line Design, Luxury Design, and M Sport Design levels. The Sport Line Design and Luxury Design grades are about the same, mainly differing in gloss-black exterior accents on the former and chrome accents on the latter. The M Sport Design comes with exterior and interior styling meant to pay homage to BMW’s legendary M performance cars. All three trims come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, leatherette upholstery, genuine wood trim, LED fog lights, power-folding heated side mirrors, 14-way power front sport seats with thigh extensions, a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat, a 16-speaker 600-watt Harmon Kardon sound system, keyless access and start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 6.5-inch infotainment system.

From there, you can opt for the Premium Tier package, which bundles speed limit information, navigation, real-time traffic, Apple CarPlay compatibility (but not Android Auto), a head-up display (HUD), and heated front seats. There’s also the Executive Tier package, which includes features from the Premium Tier as well as side- and top-view cameras, an LCD instrument cluster, automatic high beams, adaptive full-LED lights, and a parking assistant. There are also a number of a la carte options, like a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, a panoramic sunroof, and a nicer sound system.

On the safety front, every 3 Series Gran Turismo gets a standard reversing camera and a full suite of airbags. The aforementioned Premium Tier and Executive Tier packages bring additional crash-prevention features, if equipped, but blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control are standalone options. The 3 Series Gran Turismo has not been crash-tested by any external agency, but the 3 Series sedan, which shares much of its structure, earned a Top Safety Pick + rating in 2017 from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo contains all of the magic of an ordinary 3 Series with additional cargo and passenger space, a taller ride height, and standard AWD. It’s a half-step between the ordinary 3 Series sedan and BMW’s compact X3 crossover. That said, the take rate for the 3 Series Gran Turismo has not been high, and BMW says it will not revive the model once its production cycle expires, so now may be the time to get one.
