What should I look for when buying a used Volvo XC90?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 95.9% |
| 2025 | 94.7% |
| 2024 | 92.1% |
| 2023 | 90.9% |
| 2022 | 87.2% |
| 2021 | 81.9% |
| 2020 | 77.1% |
| 2019 | 75% |
| 2018 | 70.8% |
| 2017 | 69.7% |
| 2016 | 67.7% |
| 2014 | 65.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2019 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: City Safety, Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection.
- Infotainment: Android-based touchscreen infotainment with Google Built-In and Apple CarPlay connectivity, including wireless and USB-C support.
- Fuel efficiency: The XC90 plug-in hybrid offers up to 33 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge, and the T8 also offers the best fuel economy, at an EPA-rated max of 27 mpg.
Which Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?
The 2025 Volvo XC90 offers these trims:
- Core: Best for shoppers who want the entry point into the XC90 lineup, with the B5 powertrain and seven-seat layout.
- Plus: Adds the Orrefors crystal shift knob and more upscale interior material choices, making it the best-value trim for many buyers.
- Ultra: Brings the top-end equipment, including the 14-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Sound system, head-up display, and the option for the 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system.
What Volvo XC90 do most buyers choose?
The Volvo XC90 years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 2,607 | 35.5% |
| 2024 | 2,587 | 38% |
| 2023 | 2,242 | 38.7% |
| 2026 | 1,597 | 34.8% |
| 2022 | 1,586 | 40.1% |
| 2019 | 1,139 | 37.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you the broadest selection of listings and a strong mix of pricing and deal availability. That usually makes it easier to compare trims, features, and condition before you buy.
What is the Volvo XC90's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $29,309 | −24.73% |
| 2021 | $26,418 | −16.39% |
| 2023 | $38,524 | −14.92% |
| 2020 | $22,915 | −14.57% |
| 2017 | $15,370 | −14.11% |
| 2019 | $19,589 | −14.07% |
| 2016 | $13,851 | −12.68% |
| 2018 | $17,183 | −12.15% |
| 2025 | $51,571 | −8.75% |
| 2024 | $44,982 | −7.93% |
The table shows broad downward movement across the XC90 lineup, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The newer model years are still declining, but the drops are smaller than the steep double-digit changes seen in several older years. That pattern suggests you can find meaningful value in the used market while still targeting recent examples with newer features.
The 2024, 2025, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Volvo XC90 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −8.75% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.93%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 38%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $51,571. The Volvo XC90 offers a refined cabin, family-friendly space, and a calm, upscale character that suits everyday use.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Volvo continues to offer a choice of three powertrains in the XC90, all with standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the XC90 plug-in hybrid offers up to 33 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge.
- Tech: The infotainment system is larger and offers sharper resolution, and Apple CarPlay connectivity is also standard and worked seamlessly when connected both wirelessly and via USB-C cable.
- Safety: The XC90 has standard advanced driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection.
- Starting price: Base MSRP for this configuration sits at $59,745 after destination.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

I really wanted this vehicle to work out for us, but it’s just not practical to have people using the back row. Getting in and out is cumbersome just due to how the seats are designed and how they unlock and move. There’s just not enough room for it to be a good experience even for kids, much less a teenager. The back two rows need some re-thinking. For instance, Honda’s seat system in the back two rows is far superior.

CarGurus recommends the 2022 Volvo XC90
Summary
With 1,579 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,301, 39.3% of 2022 Volvo XC90 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volvo XC90 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
87.3% of 2022 Volvo XC90 listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Volvo XC90 stands out as an elegant three-row SUV with a stylish design, a quiet cabin, and strong safety ratings. It also has a distinctive eco-minded appeal thanks to an available plug-in hybrid variant and available leather-free features, giving it a more modern, sustainability-focused personality than many family SUVs.
That said, the XC90 is not without compromises. Its third row is cramped, and its touchscreen response is sluggish, which can take some shine off an otherwise upscale experience. Even so, for buyers who want a refined three-row SUV with a premium feel, hybrid availability, and a strong safety reputation, the 2022 XC90 has a clear identity.
