How much does the Volkswagen Taos cost in today's market?
Used Volkswagen Taos prices span a wide range depending on model year. Here's what the market looks like right now:
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Round Range |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $24,249 | $24,251 – $28,184 |
| 2024 | $21,376 | $20,384 – $23,257 |
| 2023 | $21,444 | $20,318 – $21,947 |
| 2022 | $18,978 | $18,869 – $20,834 |
The Volkswagen Taos's current nationwide average price is $21,647, and its year-round low is $21,003.06. That puts the model's pricing in a fairly tight band overall, with used examples spanning from the low $21,000s into the mid-$20,000s depending on year and trim. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Volkswagen Taos a good car?
Yes — the Volkswagen Taos earns strong owner approval across its model years, and it consistently appeals to shoppers who want a roomy, practical small SUV with good fuel economy and a polished feel. The all-generations owner rating is 4.5/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the Taos for its spacious interior, generous cargo room, and impressive gas mileage. The model also gets credit for a comfortable, quality-feeling cabin and a driving experience that feels more upscale than its price suggests.
Expert reviews rate the 2022 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on the powertrain, infotainment experience, and overall value proposition in some trims. 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Volkswagen Taos models reliable?
Owners consistently give the Taos solid marks, and the recurring praise centers on its roomy cabin, strong fuel economy, and everyday usefulness. Expert feedback also points to a well-built, practical small SUV that delivers a lot of space and comfort for the money.
- Owners rate the Volkswagen Taos between 4.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is most worth watching in earlier examples, where powertrain and technology complaints show up alongside the model’s otherwise strong practicality.
What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Taos?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2027 | 99.6% |
| 2026 | 96.2% |
| 2025 | 94.4% |
| 2024 | 93% |
| 2023 | 90.6% |
| 2022 | 89.8% |
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: IQ.Drive collection of ADAS, including Lane Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, and active blind-spot monitoring
- Infotainment: 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 26.8 mpg over the test route, coming up just short of the official EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving
Which Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?
The 2023 Volkswagen Taos offers...
- S: The entry trim gives you the Taos's roomy cabin, standard digital instrumentation, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Car-Net connected services, Front Assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- SE: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of equipment and price, adding an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, upgraded upholstery, an eight-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and IQ.Drive.
- SEL: This trim adds the most premium feel with 4Motion AWD, a 10.25-inch display, native navigation, leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, Beats Audio, parking sensors with automatic braking, and road-sign recognition.
What Volkswagen Taos do most buyers choose?
The Volkswagen Taos years with the most listings are 2023, 2024, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % | |---|---|---|---| | 2023 | 4,044 | 35.2% | | 2024 | 4,040 | 35.5% | | 2022 | 2,842 | 34.1% | | 2025 | 2,503 | 37.2% | | 2026 | 1,305 | 36.5% | | 2027 | 248 | 42.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare and more chances to find the right trim, mileage, and price. They also sit in the sweet spot where newer features and broader availability overlap.
What is the Volkswagen Taos's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change | |---|---|---|---| | 2025 | $24,249 | −13.98% | | 2022 | $18,978 | −8.9% | | 2024 | $21,376 | −8.09% | | 2023 | $21,444 | −2.29% |
The table shows broad downward movement across the Taos lineup, which can work in your favor if you're shopping used. The steepest drop is on the newest model year, while the older years show smaller declines. That pattern suggests recent inventory has softened more quickly than earlier examples.
The 2023, 2024, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Volkswagen Taos safe?
- 2023: 8/10
- 2022: 9/10
Volkswagen's IQ.Drive collection of ADAS is standard on the 2023 Taos SE and includes Lane Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, and active blind-spot monitoring.
For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Volkswagen Taos now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −13.98% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −8.09%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 37.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 35.5%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $21,444. The Volkswagen Taos offers a roomy cabin and practical everyday utility that make it easy to live with.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Every 2023 Taos has a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and over the test route it averaged 26.8 mpg, coming up just short of the official EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving.
- Tech: With SE and SEL trim, the infotainment system adds an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio service, and an added USB port.
- Safety: The Taos SE adds VW’s IQ.Drive collection of ADAS as standard equipment.
- Starting price: This year, 2023 VW Taos prices range from $24,155 to $34,535, not including a destination charge of $1,235.
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2028 inventory to mature.

After few years with a VW Tiguan I bought me an Atlas , the first a good car , the second even better then I bought a Taos, big mistake. The Taos brakes are not as good as the Volkswagen family, also the suspension isn’t as good as the others Volkswagen, even Jetta has a better suspension than Taos . I end up trading in the Taos for an VW Atlas.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Volkswagen Taos stands out as one of the roomiest entries in the subcompact SUV class, and that extra size translates directly into passenger comfort. Volkswagen positioned it below the Tiguan, but the Taos still offers the higher seating position and practical everyday utility many shoppers want from a small crossover. It also brings a familiar Volkswagen feel, with styling cues from the larger Atlas and composed driving manners that fit the brand’s European character.
For 2024, the Taos combines that space with a useful mix of features. Every model includes a 10.25-inch digital driver display, and all trims support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SE trim is especially appealing because it adds upgraded upholstery, an eight-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and the larger 8-inch infotainment screen without moving all the way to the top-spec SEL. Volkswagen also added an SE Black trim for 2024 with blacked-out exterior details and blue interior stitching, giving buyers a more distinctive look.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Taos is not trying to win on outright power or off-road ability, and the infotainment system can be fiddly. Even so, its roomy cabin, good fuel efficiency, and well-built feel make it a compelling choice for buyers who want a sensible, space-efficient SUV with a bit of German refinement.
