What is the Tesla Model S's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | $15,674 | −1.85% |
| 2019 | $29,765 | −1.58% |
| 2015 | $16,729 | −0.88% |
| 2017 | $21,567 | +0.6% |
| 2018 | $23,658 | +1.07% |

| 2020 | $32,859 | +5.89% |
| 2016 | $19,980 | +7.98% |
The table shows a mixed resale picture, with several years posting gains and several others slipping slightly year over year. That means used buyers can still find some softer-priced model years, while newer examples in particular have continued to move upward. The strongest increases appear in the middle of the lineup, which suggests demand remains healthy for well-equipped used Model S examples.
The 2015 and 2017 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2016, 2020, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.
Should I buy a used Tesla Model S now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2019 model is at −1.58% versus a year ago, and the 2015 model is at −0.88%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2022 model has the most listings at a current average price of $48,250.
If you're buying used today, the 2022 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the newest version, it may be worth waiting for 2027 inventory to mature.

4.6 Overall rating
Customers say
The Tesla Model S has garnered widespread acclaim for its exceptional performance and cutting-edge technology across all model years. Owners particularly appreciate its impressive speed, luxurious interior, and innovative features, making it a standout in the electric vehicle market. However, there are concerns about practicality, specifically regarding rear seat space and the design of the yoke steering wheel. Some drivers also note issues with build quality and the high price tag, which can deter potential buyers. Overall, the Model S is frequently regarded as a high-performing luxury vehicle that revolutionizes the electric driving experience.

Reviewed a 2019 Tesla Performance AWD with Ludicrous Mode on Feb 7, 2025
By far the best vehicle I have ever owned, but what makes it special is that it gets better overtime with (free) software updates that improve or add new features. Tons of room, and fits all 3 car seats across the back row. I mostly let it drive me around but it's a great feeling to know that when I'm in the mood to get sucked into my seat, I just have to floor it and hold on. I've never let up without a huge grin on my face. My monthly gas budget was $250, and my utility bill increased by around $50, so it saves me $200 a month.

This was a great value. I had never driven a Tesla before and this experience was beyond rewarding. So easy to learn and such a comfortable, low maintenance yet sexy and sophisticated ride. Loved the extra space for shopping, and extreme comfort for passengers. Would rent over and over again above any other cars. Price was just as equally efficient compared to lower brands. I highly recommend.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Tesla Model S stands out as a luxury electric sedan that helped define the modern EV era. It was revolutionary for offering more than 200 miles of EV range, a minimalist interior, and an exterior design shaped more by aerodynamics than fashion. It also arrived with a huge 17-inch infotainment screen, and its long wheelbase and clever packaging gave it generous interior space. For buyers, that combination of range, technology, and everyday usability is a big part of the appeal.
What makes the 2017 model especially distinctive is how much advanced hardware and convenience it packed in. The standard touchscreen controlled climate, entertainment, and vehicle functions, while the car also lacked a stop/start button and instead turned on as soon as the driver sat down and pressed the brake. Standard equipment included heated front seats, leatherette seating surfaces, a seven-speaker 200-watt audio system, power-adjustable front seats, and two USB ports, and unlimited free supercharging at the Tesla Supercharger network was part of the package. Available features such as a panoramic glass roof, Nappa leather seats, premium audio, Autopilot, a power rear liftgate, active air suspension, and heated rear seats added to its premium feel.
At the same time, the 2017 Tesla Model S is not without drawbacks. The buying guide notes poor build quality, and it also points out that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available. Even so, the car’s strong performance, advanced technology, and sports car-style acceleration help explain why it remains such a compelling used EV.
