Pontiac G8 Overview

Pontiac is GM's performance division, and in the last few years it has tried to reinvigorate that image with a rebranding strategy that focuses on a high-output driving experience, without sacrificing personal comfort. Part of that strategy includes the phasing out of the old stalwart Grand Prix and replacing it with the all-new Pontiac G8, a sports sedan that was introduced at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.

The G8 is Pontiac's first rear-wheel-drive sedan since the 1986 Bonneville, and is the first indication that Pontiac means business, as rear-wheel-drive cars allow for bigger, heavier, more powerful engines.

Rather that creating the G8 from the ground up, GM decided to import 50,000 Holden Commodore sport sedans, built by GM's Australian division, and rebadge them as the G8. That enabled GM to freshen up its lineup in record time. The Commodore has been the most popular car in Australia for more than a decade, and was recently named Car of the Year by one of the Australian automotive organizations.

The Commodore/G8 is built on the Zeta platform, and is the first car in the U.S. on this platform. It is shorter than the Grand Prix and will have a wheelbase 6 inches shorter than the Dodge Charger's, which it most closely resembles. Design features of the G8 include front fender vents, front foglights, distinctive hood scoops, projector-beam headlights, and a dual exhaust system with chrome outlets.

For 2008, the Pontiac G8 is available in base and GT trims, featuring a 261-hp V6 or an even more impressive 362-hp V8, respectively. The V8 shuts down half its cylinders during low-load driving to boost fuel economy. The GT is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The interior is luxuriously appointed, with full power features, a seven-speaker audio system with an MP3 input jack, six standard airbags, standard satellite radio, and OnStar. Leather is an option for both trims, and a Sports Package will beef up the standard 18-inch wheels to 19-inchers, add a stiffer suspension, and attach a rear spoiler.

The new Pontiac G8 is scheduled to be in showrooms in early 2008.

The Pontiac G8 has garnered enthusiastic praise from drivers for its remarkable performance and distinctive design across its model years. However, some criticisms arise regarding fuel economy, challenges with parts availability, and minor interior quality issues.

Great car. Like a Camaro, but with 4 doors, and a much lower price to play. They are rare, so they have value that only increases with time.

a bold entry in the midsize performance sedan category. Designed as a rebranded Holden Commodore from Australia, it brought a unique combination of style, performance, and affordability to the American market.

The Pontiac G8 is a GREAT car for those that need something for the family, but don't want to give up their fun car. This car has tons of space on the inside, is extremely comfortable for both short and long trips and is relatively quiet for what it is. At the same time, the L76 (in GT trim) and LS3 (in GXP trim) are rip-roaring power plants that can get the car going in a very short time (my GT will do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds). And, it's not just straight-line performance. The car handles great in the turns, especially considering how big this car is. As with any car, there are a few issues that have come up with the G8 over time, but nothing major or hugely expensive. The G8 has proven itself to be a really reliable car. My own G8 (a 2009 Sport Red Metallic GT) currently has 24,000 miles and the only work that has needed to be done was all done under warranty. The only drawbacks of this car are few: - These cars were made right as the entire industry really started moving toward infotainment systems and more upscale interiors, so the interior has become prematurely dated. It's not BAD, it's just not modern. But, it's still a great interior for what it is. - Not many of these were made, so there isn't a huge number of parts available for these cars. The engines are fine as they are LS-based engines so lots of parts there. But body panels and interior and exterior trim are hard to come by and command premium prices. There is good aftermarket support for these cars, but that tends to be geared for performance improvements, not replacement parts. I am beyond happy with my G8 and intend on keeping this car for a LONG, LONG time. It's my daily driver during the non-winter months, but has also been down the drag-strip a time or two. Best of both worlds! UPDATE (10/30/2015) - Car now has 32,500 miles and still puts a grin on my face every time I drive it. I've had no major problems over the last 8,000 miles since I wrote this review. The only thing that has truly gone wrong with the car in that time is that the out trim pieces of both front seats have broken where they attach to the frame of the seat. This causes the panels to sag. Apparently, this is a design flaw in the trim pieces and I have heard rumor that there is an updated panel that tries to resolve the issue available from GM dealers. However, I just used zip-ties to reattach them and you can't tell any difference from the way they originally were before they broke. Much cheaper than getting new parts I'm betting. Otherwise, this is still my favorite vehicle I've ever owned and I'm loving every moment in it!

I own a 2009 Pontiac g8 gt and I can only say good things about it especially the power of a ls2 corvette engine under the hood. Unfortunately pontiac went out of business but this is such a great car I would have bought in to the company for a live time. If your looking for power under thirty grand this is the car for you with a 6.0L engine that Makes 361hp it will move but if you also want something that can handle the g8 has that too with just a tap of the brake you can move around a corner quickly. The interior of this car is also very nice and makes you feel as if you are one of those fancy European luxury cars and this car comes equipped with onstar. Overall the 2009 Pontiac g8 gt is a great modern muscle car but there are flaws such a terrible gas mileage so if your looking to go green don't buy this car.

amazing engine performance, minimal braking distance required from 140-0, sharp looks and typical GM low grade plastic interior, many manufacturing defects to begin with therefore many trips to the dealer required ,stock wheels have a chronic vibrating at 90-110 disorder

Pontiac G8 FAQs

Which Pontiac G8 is a V8?

Is the Pontiac G8 a rare car?

Yes, the Pontiac G8 is considered a relatively rare car. Pontiac sold just over 30,000 G8s during its two-year production run, including 1,829 of the high-performance GXP models. This limited production makes the G8 a unique and sought-after vehicle among enthusiasts.

Is a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT a good car?

Yes, the 2009 Pontiac G8 GT is highly regarded as a good car. It boasts impressive mechanical merits, including energetic engines and a combination of sharp handling and comfortable ride quality. Is a Pontiac G8 worth buying?

A Pontiac G8 can be worth buying, especially if you are looking at the V8-powered versions like the G8 GT or GXP. These models offer strong performance and driving enjoyment. However, the base model with a 256-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 might not be as appealing to enthusiasts.
