What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The G-Class lineup consists of gasoline G 550 and AMG G 63 models, and a first-ever all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology variant. The base G 550 trades last year’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine for a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG G 63 keeps its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which produces 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Both models add mild-hybrid system providing 20 hp and 148 lb-ft at lower speeds, with everything connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions and permanent four-wheel drive (4WD) with locking front, center, and rear differentials.

Which Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers these trims:

• G 550: The base model brings the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, mild-hybrid assistance, nine-speed automatic transmission, permanent 4WD with locking front, center, and rear differentials, 19-inch wheels, MBUX with dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Burmester 3D surround sound system. It suits you if you want the core G-Class experience and the best-value trim.
• AMG G 63: This performance trim adds the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, more power, AMG Active Ride Control suspension, 20-inch wheels, and a sportier steering wheel with buttons and switches for the various settings. It suits you if you want the most powerful gasoline G-Class and a more aggressive driving character.
• G 580 with EQ Technology: This all-electric variant expands the lineup with a fully electric powertrain and the ability to perform the “G Turn,” rotating the vehicle on the spot. It suits you if you want the newest powertrain direction in the G-Class lineup.

What Mercedes-Benz G-Class do most buyers choose?

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class years with the most listings are 2024, 2022, and 2023.

Higher-listing model years tend to draw more shopper attention because they offer more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right color, trim, and price. They also often sit near the center of the used-market sweet spot, where availability and pricing both stay attractive.

What is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, which gives used buyers more room to shop than they had a year ago. The largest drops are concentrated in several older and recent model years, while a couple of years are essentially flat or slightly higher. That mix suggests the G-Class still commands strong demand, but pricing has softened enough in many years to create better entry points for shoppers.

The 2018 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.

The 2014, 2018, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?

• 2025: 7/10
• 2021: 8/10
• 2020: 7/10
• 2019: 6/10

The 2025 G-Class includes standard driver-assistance features such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, and traffic sign recognition.

For the safest used buy, the 2021 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.

Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.04% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −3.71%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 32.3% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.1%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $178,143. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers a distinctive boxy design, strong presence, and a cabin that feels unmistakably upscale.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The base G 550 trades last year’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine for a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG G 63 keeps its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which produces 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
• Tech: It features the same Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system as other vehicles wearing the three-pointed star, with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a pair of 12.3-inch screens.
• Safety: Three new features were also added for the 2025 model year, including route-based speed adaptation for adaptive cruise control, automated lane centering, and an emergency-stop feature.
• Starting price: The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 550 and AMG G 63 are scheduled to reach U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2024, with pricing information to be revealed closer to that time.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
