Is the Lexus RX a good car?
Yes — the Lexus RX is a strong choice if you want a luxury SUV that emphasizes comfort, refinement, and reliability. The all-generations owner rating is 4.66/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the RX for its smooth ride, upscale cabin, and dependable ownership experience. Across the model years, the recurring themes are comfort, luxury features, and a quiet, easygoing driving character.
Expert reviews rate the 2020 and 2021 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs are that some recent versions lean toward pedestrian performance, certain interiors can feel less premium than the badge suggests, and the design can be polarizing. Even so, the RX remains appealing if you value a polished daily driver over a sporty one.
35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Lexus RX models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently describe the Lexus RX as comfortable, refined, and dependable, with a smooth ride and a premium-feeling cabin that hold up well across model years. The RX’s long-running reputation for reliability is a major part of why it continues to attract used buyers.
- Owners rate the Lexus RX between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally shaped more by maintenance history and prior use than by the model’s core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Lexus RX?
Across all model years, at 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 94.3% |
| 2025 | 92% |
| 2024 | 89.5% |
| 2023 | 87.1% |

| 2017 | 56.8% |
| 2016 | 53.4% |
| 2015 | 50.1% |
| 2014 | 49.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 3.0
- Infotainment: 9.8-inch touchscreen in lower trims and a much larger 14-inch display for other models, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model returns 25 mpg in combined city and highway driving while the AWD model drops to 24 mpg. The hybrid RX 350h is estimated at 36 mpg combined, and the plug-in hybrid RX 450h+ has a 35-mpg combined fuel economy estimate with 37 miles of electric-only range.
Which Lexus RX trim should I buy?
The 2024 Lexus RX offers these trims:
- RX 350: The base model starts with a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, an eight-speed automatic, and available FWD or AWD, making it the entry point if you want the core RX experience.
- RX 350h: This hybrid adds standard AWD and stronger fuel efficiency, and it stands out as the best-value trim for many shoppers who want a balanced mix of economy and equipment.
- RX 450h+: This plug-in hybrid adds an 18.1-kWh battery pack, 304 hp, and up to 37 miles of electric-only range, making it the right fit if you can charge regularly.
- RX 500h F Sport Performance: This performance-oriented trim adds 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, plus a six-speed automatic and AWD for buyers who want the most power in the lineup.
- F Sport Handling: This available trim for the RX 350 or RX 500h adds a more athletic setup for drivers who want a sharper feel.
- Premium: This trim adds parking proximity sensors.
- Luxury: This top trim adds a head-up display and a more inviting cabin treatment with faux suede inserts.
What Lexus RX do most buyers choose?
The Lexus RX years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 2,910 | 38.3% |
| 2023 | 2,899 | 38.2% |
| 2025 | 2,307 | 38% |
| 2022 | 2,041 | 37.2% |
| 2021 | 1,498 | 36.8% |
| 2016 | 1,465 | 36.5% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also sit close enough to the current generation to deliver the modern RX formula buyers tend to want.

- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2024 Lexus RX is offered in four distinct models, starting with the base RX 350. It's powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and is available with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The RX 350h is the hybrid version with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder which makes 246 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque that is routed through a continuously variable transmission (CVT), with standard AWD. The RX 500h F Sport Performance represents the sporty side of the RX lineup, with a turbo 2.4-liter inline-four combining with the hybrid powertrain to produce 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. It sports a six-speed automatic transmission and (AWD). We drove the plug-in hybrid RX 450h+ which is new for 2024. It takes the RX 350h's powertrain and adds a much larger 18.1-kWh battery pack. Power output is increased to 304 hp and the EPA estimates it can return up to 37 miles of electric-only range on a full charge.
- Tech: The new infotainment system is much more conventional, with a touchscreen that measures 9.8 inches in lower trims and a much larger 14-inch display for other models. The system also accepts natural speech commands, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are both wireless.
- Safety: All RX models come standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance features.
- Starting price: Pricing for the 2024 Lexus RX start at $49,950 (including a $1,350 in destination fee) for the base RX 350 with FWD.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Love our 2020 Lexus RX — it’s smooth, quiet, and feels genuinely luxurious. The interior quality and comfort are exactly what I hoped for. My only complaints are the subscription requirements for remote start and navigation, and I wish the rear seats had warmers. Overall, excellent value, great reliability, and a car that feels like it will last.

Extremely clean interior with the exception of one tear in the drivers seat, made me want to buy this vehicle. The interior felt new. No stains, not even dirt. The exterior had been repainted at one point, albeit well done. The listing says no accidents but it had a minor cosmetic rear impact in 2014 (no big deal) and unfortunately also had a tree branch fall on the sunroof shattering the glass and, despite being repaired, leaving it inoperable at least consistently. When I tested the sunroof, it wouldn't close because broken glass particles were in the way. Those were cleaned up and the dealer says it’s functioning now, but you take on some risk. Not the end of the world. If I purchased this vehicle, I’d pull the fuse that operates the sunroof and leave it in the closed position. It drove smooth, drivetrain felt great, smooth transmission, alignment, breaks, suspension.

CarGurus recommends the 2023 Lexus RX

Summary
With 2,904 currently listed for sale and an average price of $45,522, 37.3% of 2023 Lexus RX listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Lexus RX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
87.4% of 2023 Lexus RX listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Lexus RX stays true to the formula that made the nameplate so popular, but the redesign adds enough dynamic and technological polish to keep it feeling current. Lexus is described as taking no risks with this version, yet the updates are said to enhance the model’s appeal. That combination should matter to buyers who want a luxury crossover SUV that leans into the RX’s established reputation for being reliable, refined, safe, and stylish.
In day-to-day use, the 2023 RX stands out for being comfortable and for its premium interior materials, while its technology is another clear strength. The cabin’s upscale feel helps reinforce the RX’s luxury positioning, and the model’s broad appeal is tied to Lexus striking the right balance with this latest two-row midsize SUV. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the standard suspension can produce a woozy ride on imperfect pavement, cargo space is limited, and the head-up display integration is not especially strong.
