Is the Lexus GX a good car?
Yes — the Lexus GX is a strong choice if you want a luxury SUV with rugged capability and a refined cabin. The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its off-road capability, reliability, and comfortable, luxurious feel. They also repeatedly highlight its durable construction, strong road presence, and smooth, confident driving character.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2020 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy, outdated technology in older years, and off-road-focused equipment that can push prices up on better-equipped versions. 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Lexus GX models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Lexus GX as durable, dependable, and well-built, with a reputation that carries across model years. Expert reviews also reinforce its rugged construction and long-haul appeal.
- Owners rate the Lexus GX between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and maintenance history than to the model’s core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Lexus GX?

| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 97.6% |

| 2017 | 56.9% |
| 2016 | 52.7% |

Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 3.0
- Infotainment: 14-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth
- Fuel efficiency: EPA-rated 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined
Which Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2025 Lexus GX offers these trims:
- Premium: The entry trim starts at $65,285 and gives you the athletic twin-turbo powertrain, good interior space, solid safety and driver-assistance tech, and an easy-to-use infotainment system. It is the best-value starting point if you want the GX experience without moving up the ladder right away.
- Premium+: This trim adds more equipment for shoppers who want a step up in comfort and convenience while staying close to the core GX formula.
- Overtrail: This trim adds the trail-focused hardware, including all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select drive modes, crawl control, and downhill assist control.
- Luxury: This trim shifts the focus toward comfort and adds a more upscale feel for buyers who want a more refined daily driver.
- Luxury+: This trim builds on the Luxury trim with additional premium equipment for shoppers who want the most comfort-oriented GX.
What Lexus GX do most buyers choose?
The Lexus GX years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,424 | 33.8% |
| 2023 | 1,362 | 34.1% |
| 2022 | 1,203 | 33.7% |
| 2025 | 954 | 32.5% |
| 2020 | 765 | 34.1% |
| 2021 | 763 | 32.6% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare and more chances to find the right price and equipment mix. They also sit close enough to the newest redesign to feel modern while still offering more value than the latest model year.
What is the Lexus GX's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $87,536 | −6.04% |
| 2024 | $80,581 | −5.64% |
| 2020 | $37,894 | −5.02% |
| 2022 | $48,256 | −3.72% |
| 2017 | $26,481 | −3.65% |
| 2023 | $55,763 | −3.39% |
| 2016 | $24,147 | −2.99% |
| 2015 | $23,064 | −2.51% |
| 2019 | $33,062 | −2.26% |
| 2021 | $42,145 | −1.5% |
| 2018 | $29,496 | −1.3% |
| 2014 | $21,107 | −1.08% |
Most model years are moving lower year over year, which can work in your favor if you are shopping used. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while older examples are changing more slowly. That creates a useful spread of value across the lineup for buyers who want to balance price and age.
The 2014, 2018, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Lexus GX safe?

Should I buy a used Lexus GX now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −6.04% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −5.64%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 32.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.8%.

Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: All Lexus GX trims come equipped with this twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6, which produces 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. That’s disepnsed to all four wheels via full-time four-wheel drive (4WD) with a limited-slip center differential, and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
- Tech: Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth are standard.

Customers say
The Lexus GX is a well-loved luxury SUV known for its impressive off-road capabilities, robust construction, and luxurious interior. Most owners appreciate its comfort and reliability, especially on long drives. The V8 engine is favored for its power, providing a smooth and confident drive. However, many drivers express concern about its fuel economy and find the technology outdated compared to newer competitors. Overall, the GX stands out for its rugged yet refined feel, making it a top choice for families and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Reviewed a 2010 Lexus GX on Oct 22, 2025
The 2010 Lexus GX is generally a great SUV with a V8 engine shared with the Lexus LS460. Although it looks like a rugged heavy duty SUV, the weight of it tends to cause it to wear down its components like the suspension and engine. Trouble issues tend to be oil leaks from numerous places like the valve covers and cam towers. Additional issues include the dreaded coolant leak of the valley pan gasket and radiator. If you drive a used one, if you smell a sweet odor emanating from the engine, it's probably one of those aforementioned leaks of coolant. Should you buy one? Yes, with the caveat that most if not all aspects of the engine, coolant and suspension have been addressed. Also check CarFax websites for services performed and NHTSA for known issues reported.

Good reliable features. Yes for the price it’s a good value since it’s a Toyota. It’s missing a backup camera and Bluetooth. I’d compare it to the 4Runner.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Lexus GX stands out because it blends old-school SUV character with genuine capability. Even after a facelift, it remains one of the most dated luxury SUVs on the market, but that age also helps explain why it is so capable. For buyers who value a comfortable, robust luxury SUV that can handle off-road use, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
Lexus updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it more memorable, but the vehicle still carries an outdated feel that may not suit shoppers looking for the latest technology or the most modern design. Its strengths are straightforward: off-road capability and comfort. That makes it a distinctive choice in a segment where many luxury SUVs have moved away from specialization.
Owners also tend to praise its robust build, luxurious interior, ride quality, and reliability, even at high mileage. The tradeoff is that poor gas mileage is a common complaint, reinforcing that the 2020 Lexus GX is best suited to buyers who prioritize durability and capability over efficiency and cutting-edge features.
