Is the Kia Rio a good car?
Yes — the Kia Rio is a strong pick if you want an affordable, fuel-efficient compact car with low running costs.
The all-generations owner rating is 4/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Rio for its affordability, practical size, and impressive fuel efficiency. Many also highlight its low maintenance costs and easy everyday drivability.
25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

- Owners rate the Kia Rio between 4 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally shaped more by vehicle history and upkeep than by the model itself, so a careful inspection and records review are smart steps.
What should I look for when buying a used Kia Rio?
Across all model years, at 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 79.2% |
| 2022 | 75.8% |
| 2021 | 66.5% |
| 2020 | 62.3% |
| 2019 | 60.2% |
| 2018 | 52.5% |
| 2017 | 47.1% |
| 2016 | 45.4% |
| 2015 | 48.3% |
| 2014 | 52.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
What Kia Rio do most buyers choose?
The Kia Rio years with the most listings are 2022, 2023, and 2021.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 393 | 28.2% |
| 2023 | 312 | 29.8% |
| 2021 | 257 | 26.1% |
| 2020 | 244 | 23% |
| 2019 | 201 | 23.4% |
| 2018 | 179 | 22.9% |
These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they offer a wider selection and more pricing competition. That combination often makes it easier to find a trim, mileage, and condition mix that fits your budget.
What is the Kia Rio's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | $6,569 | −14.73% |
| 2018 | $8,567 | −8.31% |
| 2021 | $12,136 | −6.38% |

| 2017 | $7,338 | −0.49% |
| 2022 | $14,157 | −0.46% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you're shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The largest drops are concentrated in older and mid-cycle years, while several newer entries are moving only slightly. That pattern gives you more room to compare listings and target the best-value trim or mileage combination.
The 2017 and 2022 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2022, 2017, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2022 model is at −0.46% versus a year ago, and the 2021 model is at −6.38%.

The car looked good inside but the paint on the outside was terrible and it had a dent on one side that was not visible in the photos shown. The value is also not acceptable for the condition it is in.

incredibly fast little car. greatest power to weight ration i have ever experienced in a cheap production car. in stock trim it blew the doors off a number of comparable cars. and that 5 speed was really synchronized. i would buy another one just to make it a circuit racer.

Overview
Once the cheapest car in America, the Kia Rio is a subcompact sedan and hatchback designed for budget drivers. Its small size makes good use of its 4-cylinder engine, and though base models are minimally equipped, higher trims and the sporty hatch come standard with enough features to make you forget this is an economy car. The Rio emerged in 2001 as a sedan and Rio Cinco hatchback. Based on the Kia-built Ford Aspire, the Rio was smaller than Kia's inaugural U.S. compact, the Sephia. The first Rio featured a 1.5-liter, 96-hp DOHC I4 engine with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The engine got a little bigger and more powerful over the first few years, but the Rio essentially stayed the same. The front-wheel drive subcompact came in one trim. The hatch featured standard power steering, front console, rear defrost, and tilt steering wheel, which were only options in the bare-bones sedan. Front airbags were standard, and side airbags were never available. A slight upgrade to the front end, suspension, dashboard, and introduction of cupholders and standard power windows occurred in 2003, but it wasn't until 2006 that the Kia Rio got a whole new look. The second generation, based more on the Hyundai Accent, carried a 110-hp 1.6-liter I4 engine. The overall size and interior space was bigger and more airbags were added. The hatchback was renamed the Rio5 (or rather translated, since Rio Cinco means Rio 5), and the sedan came in both a base and LX trim. Once again, the base had no air conditioning or power features, which you could find on the LX. In 2007, the sedan gets a sporty SX trim that carries many of the same features as the Rio5 SX. Though it's purely no frills, the Rio's price tag makes it an attractive option for drivers on a budget. Good fuel economy and a decent engine (for the Rio's light weight) make it fun to drive and overshadow the strained acceleration and cramped backseat. There is supposedly a Rio hybrid in the works, but no date has been set yet for its release.
