The Jeep Cherokee's current nationwide average price is $15,118, and its lowest point over the past year was $15,113. Recently, prices have come down for the 2021 and 2022 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Jeep Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the Jeep Cherokee earns strong marks from owners overall, and its long-running appeal comes through clearly in the data. The all-generations owner rating is 4.46/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the Cherokee for its comfort, roomy cabin, and useful feature content. The model also gets consistent credit for its ride quality, everyday versatility, and the sense of capability that comes through in both older and newer versions.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2014 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs show up in recent expert-tested years as fuel economy, steering feel, and cargo space, along with some complicated vehicle settings. Even so, the Cherokee remains a compelling used SUV if you want a distinctive blend of utility and character.
33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Jeep Cherokee models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Cherokee’s comfort, capability, and everyday usefulness as its strongest traits. Across the lineup, the model also earns praise for its rugged character and the way it balances utility with a comfortable ride.
- Owners rate the Jeep Cherokee between 3.86 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is worth weighing carefully on older examples, especially if you want a Cherokee with a cleaner history and a stronger track record.
What should I look for when buying a used Jeep Cherokee?
Across all model years, at 69.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 98.5% |
| 2023 | 84.4% |
| 2022 | 80.6% |
| 2021 | 76.8% |
| 2020 | 71.5% |
| 2019 | 69.5% |
| 2018 | 67.3% |
| 2017 | 63% |
| 2016 | 61.9% |
| 2015 | 59.7% |
| 2014 | 59.4% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and Active Driving Assist
- Infotainment: a 12.3-inch touchscreen with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 37 mpg combined (39 mpg city, 35 mpg highway)
Which Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee offers these trims:
- Base: The base model gives you the Cherokee’s standard hybrid powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and standard driver-assistance features, making it the best-value starting point for shoppers who want the core Cherokee experience.
- Laredo: The Laredo adds more equipment while staying close to the entry price, and it suits buyers who want a step up in content without moving far up the lineup.
- Limited: The Limited adds leatherette seats and wireless device charging, making it a strong choice if you want a more upscale cabin and extra convenience.
- Overland: The Overland brings the top-end trim treatment with 20-inch wheels, traffic-sign recognition, and the most premium-feeling interior in the lineup.
What Jeep Cherokee do most buyers choose?
The Jeep Cherokee years with the most listings are 2020, 2019, and 2018.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 5,332 | 34.2% |
| 2019 | 4,856 | 33.7% |
| 2018 | 4,366 | 33.5% |
| 2021 | 3,216 | 34% |
| 2016 | 2,368 | 31.7% |
| 2017 | 2,325 | 32.8% |
Those years tend to draw the most attention because they sit in the sweet spot between newer features and lower used prices. They also give you a broad mix of trims and equipment, which helps you find a Cherokee that fits your budget and feature needs.
What is the Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | $12,659 | −11.28% |
| 2021 | $18,681 | −10.03% |
| 2022 | $22,417 | −9.95% |
| 2019 | $14,607 | −9.88% |
| 2020 | $16,503 | −9.34% |
| 2015 | $9,333 | −9.19% |
| 2016 | $10,249 | −8.99% |
| 2014 | $8,680 | −6.49% |
| 2017 | $11,692 | −5.5% |
| 2023 | $23,340 | +0.46% |
Most Cherokee model years are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used and want more value for your money. The declines are especially pronounced in several recent years, while one newer model year is essentially flat. Overall, the table points to a market where prices have softened across much of the lineup.
The 2023 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2023, 2017, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Jeep Cherokee safe?
- 2026: 7/10
- 2021: 7/10
- 2016: 6/10
- 2014: 8/10
Jeep offers similar standard driver-assistance features to other mainstream brands, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality.
For the safest used buy, the 2014 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used Jeep Cherokee now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2022 model is at −9.95% versus a year ago, and the 2021 model is at −10.03%.
- Deal availability: The 2021 model has 34% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2020 model has the most listings at a current average price of $16,503. The Jeep Cherokee offers a comfortable ride, roomy cabin, and a distinctive sense of character that helps it stand out from many mainstream SUVs.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The new Cherokee’s specs don’t seem very Jeep-like at first. The only powertrain available at launch consists of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a two-motor hybrid system with a planetary gearset taking the place of a conventional transmission, similar to what Subaru and Toyota use. It’s good for 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque.
- Tech: The 2026 Cherokee comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, still running the same Uconnect 5 infotainment system as the outgoing Cherokee from the 2023 model year. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain standard.
- Safety: Jeep offers similar standard driver-assistance features to other mainstream brands, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Active Driving Assist, which pairs automated lane centering with adaptive cruise control for highway driving, is also standard.

This car has tank-like features. This car has good value. This car is missing remote start. I would compare this vehicle to a Chevrolet Traverse.

I had a 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk a few years ago and I fell in love with the Cherokee ls after that. Sadly I had to part ways with the original one I had but being able to find another Cherokee at a good price and mileage is amazing. I love the ride it provides! Great sound system, modern interior and design, quiet ride in the cab with minimal road noise and incredibly comfortable. Love the Cherokees!

Why it stands out
The 2020 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a compact SUV that blends Jeep styling with a more crossover-like shape and a strong emphasis on available all-weather traction. By this point in the model’s third generation, it had already moved away from the boxier, more traditional Cherokee look, and the 2019 refresh gave it a conventional one-piece headlight design, a new hood, bumper, fog lamps, and taillamps. It also gained a 7-inch touchscreen as standard, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which helps make the Cherokee feel more modern and easier to live with than earlier versions.
For 2020, Jeep added new wheels and colors across various trims, including Sangria and Spitfire Orange, and Alexa was added to Uconnect 8.4 systems with navigation. The Cherokee’s appeal also comes from its available powertrains and capability-focused hardware: the model line offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque alongside the V6, and Jeep continued to offer features such as Selec-Terrain and, on certain trims, a low-range transfer case and rear differential lock. That said, the generation’s reputation is not spotless, and the buying guide notes major transmission issues in early third-generation models, while the broader pros and cons list points to poor efficiency and some bad engines through the years.
