About the Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is a subcompact crossover SUV based on the same platform as the popular Kia Soul. The first generation arrived in the US in the 2018 model year, available in gas, hybrid, and electric drivetrains. A second generation of the Kona debuted in December of 2022, with gas and electric version available. The hybrid was discontinued for the 2023 model year in the United States. Note: Hyundai markets the Kona Electric and the Kona N performance version as individual models, so we’re only covering the gas version here.

The first generation of the Kona was sort of neither here nor there, but the current generation has definitely dialed in the right formula. The 2023 Hyundai Kona received awards from both Car and Driver and U.S. News, leading a very crowded field of subcompact SUVs. At just over $30,000, the performance oriented N-Line trim level offers the better 190hp 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, which still offers up to 32mpg on the highway.

What are the disadvantages of the Hyundai Kona?

The base engine in the SE and SEL trim levels offers just 147 hp and its performance is best described as “poky.” Best to leave this one for the rental fleets and opt for either the N Line or the Limited, which provide the 190-hp turbo. The Kona isn’t quite the home run value of the original generation, but it still provides a lot for a reasonable price tag.

Comparison: Is the Hyundai Kona better than the Honda HR-V?

Your average Joe and/or Jane on the street would probably opt for the Honda because… well, it’s a Honda and they’re always a better value, right? Not necessarily. The Honda HR-V offers just three trim levels, all powered by the same 158-hp engine, with less technology, fewer amenities, and a less enticing warranty. The Kona’s base price is exactly the same as the HR-V’s, but the Limited trim–which provides a lot more equipment than the HR-V EX-L–is significantly more expensive.

Is the Hyundai Kona a reliable car?

As of this writing, the Hyundai Kona has been the subject of four recalls, one for a label replacement, one for a seatbelt assembly, one for piston rings on the 2.0-liter engine that may not be appropriately heat treated, and one for an electronic controller for the Auto Stop & Go transmission pump.

Is the Hyundai Kona worth the cost?

The current generation of the Kona is a great value, despite being more expensive than the first generation. There really isn’t anything in the market right now that isn’t more expensive than it was four years ago, so the Kona is really no exception. The redesign is smart and attractive, and on the used market you can find a low-mileage Limited AWD for less than $27,000.
