Is the Honda Pilot a good car?
Yes — the Honda Pilot is a strong used pick if you want a roomy, family-focused SUV with broad appeal. The all-generations owner rating is 4.68/5 across every model year in the data.

The main tradeoffs that show up in expert feedback are average fuel economy, some uneven engine or transmission impressions in certain years, and interior materials that can feel less refined in some models.
34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Honda Pilot models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Honda Pilot as spacious, comfortable, and easy to live with, and those strengths show up again and again across the model years. Expert feedback also reinforces its family-friendly character, especially when it comes to practicality and everyday usability.
- Owners rate the Honda Pilot between 4.4 and 4.91 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership picture is strongest when you choose a well-maintained example with a clean history and service records that match the Pilot’s family-hauler role.
What should I look for when buying a used Honda Pilot?
Across all model years, at 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.3% |
| 2025 | 90.9% |
| 2024 | 89% |
| 2023 | 84.1% |

| 2020 | 69.5% |
| 2019 | 66.7% |
| 2018 | 64.2% |
| 2017 | 60.9% |
| 2016 | 59.3% |
| 2015 | 57.6% |
| 2014 | 56.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing suite
- Infotainment: larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel for all trim levels
- Fuel efficiency: The 2026 Pilot is estimated to return up to 22 mpg combined (19/27 mpg city/highway) with the FWD layout. With AWD, the EPA estimates a slight drop to 21 mpg combined (19/25 mpg city/highway), while the off-road-capable TrailSport drops by about another 1 mpg across the board.
Which Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2026 Honda Pilot offers these trims:
- Sport: The entry-level trim starts the lineup with the standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, and Honda Sensing safety suite; it’s the value-focused starting point.
- EX-L: Adds leather seats, a removable second-row seat, and wireless phone charging, making it the best-value trim for many shoppers.
- TrailSport: Adds the off-road-oriented hardware and is the standout choice if you want the Pilot’s more rugged capability.
- Touring: Adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, and a hands-free power liftgate for a more upscale family setup.
- Black Edition: Sits at the top of the range with the most premium presentation, including unique styling details.
What Honda Pilot do most buyers choose?
The Honda Pilot years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 4,614 | 37.8% |
| 2025 | 4,008 | 34.2% |
| 2023 | 3,316 | 36.2% |
| 2022 | 3,007 | 37% |
| 2026 | 2,771 | 33.1% |
| 2021 | 2,607 | 37.5% |
The highest-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare, more pricing spread to shop, and a better chance of finding the equipment level you want. They also tend to sit close to the sweet spot between newer features and used-car value.
What is the Honda Pilot's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $28,376 | −10.04% |
| 2019 | $20,386 | −8.5% |
| 2018 | $18,170 | −7.9% |
| 2020 | $22,331 | −7.59% |
| 2023 | $36,846 | −6.6% |
| 2017 | $17,026 | −6.0% |
| 2021 | $25,042 | −5.92% |
| 2025 | $42,306 | −5.53% |
| 2016 | $14,837 | −5.0% |
| 2024 | $38,935 | −4.77% |
| 2015 | $11,818 | −3.79% |
| 2014 | $10,746 | −2.72% |
Most Honda Pilot model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it creates more room for value. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while the older models are changing more gradually. That pattern suggests you can often find stronger pricing on a broad range of Pilot years without giving up the model’s core family-friendly appeal.
The 2014, 2015, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Honda Pilot safe?
- 2026: 6/10
- 2025: 6/10

- 2017: 7/10
- 2016: 9/10
- 2015: 3/10
- 2014: 8/10
All Pilot trims come with the Honda Sensing suite of safety features.
For the safest used buy, the 2016 and 2020 models both post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Honda Pilot now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.53% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −4.77%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 34.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 37.8%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $38,935. The Honda Pilot offers a roomy cabin and strong everyday practicality that make it especially appealing for families.
Consider waiting if:

Reviewed a 2013 Honda Pilot on Aug 20, 2025
The Honda Pilot was redesigned in 2009 with a slightly boxer look with larger windows pillars that result in more blind spots than previous models. This is due to government regulation. Outward visibility is affected by the changes, but it is not as bad as newer vehicles. The 250HP 6 is as strong as the earlier model and acceleration times are not affected by the additional weight in this generation. The car is smoother and quieter than both the 1st and the 3rd generation models. Handling is very good as well and outshine the 3rd generation pilots. Interior volume with both rows folded is very good at 87 cubic feet. All pilots are spacious, with the first taking the edge with 91. The pluses of this car is reliability, repair simplicity good handling, quiet interior, and precise steering. The Pilot falls a little short in acceleration and fuel mileage. Typical city gas mileage is 17 mpg with the 2wd and 15.5 with the 4wd versions. Higgway is 21 at 80 mph, which is today's cruise speed. Unless the car is towing, the engine transmission and brakes dont get tired. This car is a 4 star car. It does most things well,

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Pilot 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Pilot is a versatile, comfortable three-row SUV that still brings a lot of everyday usefulness to the table. It offers tons of cargo space, an adult-friendly third row, and an impressive list of standard safety features, which helps it remain appealing for families who want practicality and peace of mind in one package. Owners also praise its spacious interior, responsive handling, and overall comfort.
At the same time, the Pilot no longer stands out from the competition the way it once did, and Honda’s choices on driver controls and in-car tech are among its biggest shortcomings. The interior materials can feel cheap, and some owners note that it is not the best choice for towing. Even so, the Pilot’s powerful engine and strong mix of space, comfort, and standard safety equipment make it a solid option for buyers who value usefulness over flash.
