I test drive the Genesis GV70, the Acura MDX, the Lexus RX350, and decided on the Genesis GV80. First of all the GV80 is a great looking car and looks very different from other Luxury SUV’s on the road. The interior space was ideal for me; a taller and larger man. I found the 3.5t to be ideal for me as it is a 4 wheel drive. And you can really feel the power of the 3.5t compared to the 2.5. The interior is gorgeous, and the safety rating is 10/10.

GV80 is the first SUV from Hyundais luxury brand, Genesis. It competes with the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Lexus RX and no argument with that, the vehicle is loaded with safety features and creature comforts. It is quick, quiet, beautifully appointed (Prestige Package) and enjoyable to drive. Ive only had it a week but I love driving it already. Admittedly, the Infotainment takes some getting used to but I expected that.

Misses nothing. Comparable to the BMW X5, the Audi 6 series, the Porsche Cayenne, the Lincoln aviator. There are a lot of cars that the Genesis ranks in the same category however, you get more standard options for less money.

About the Genesis GV80
The Genesis GV80 is the top-of-the-heap in the Genesis luxury SUV lineup. It’s available with either a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6, in both rear- and all-wheel drive (AWD). The GV80 debuted in 2020 as a 2021 model year, and received a refresh for 2023. Changes were limited mostly to aesthetics outside, but inside the digital instrument panel was replaced with a massive 27-inch OLED screen that also replaces the center touchscreen.
What are the advantages of the Genesis GV80?
- Stunning exterior and interior design
- Outstanding driving characteristics
- A lot of car for the money
What is the best Genesis GV80 model year?
If you can live with separate instrument cluster and center infotainment screens, you get about 95% of the current model year’s content with the 2021 and 2022 model year GV80. A new Bang & Olufsen audio system replaces the Lexicon sound system for 2023, but whether it’s truly better or not is too subjective.
What are the disadvantages of the Genesis GV80?
The GV80 is going to lose out to shoppers who are interested in an alternative powertrain. The GV80 is available in gas only, with no parallel hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electrified version available. There’s also the issue with the third-row seat: If you buy a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder model, you can’t get a third row. That seems ridiculous, but blame the product planners. And if you do decide to get the V6 with the third row, it’s fit for only small kids. Your adult or large teen passengers will not have a good time in the way back.
Comparison: Is the Genesis GV80 better than the BMW X5?
It’s surprising that the Genesis GV80 and the BMW X5 (until you get to the M60 version) are very competitively priced. If anything, the X5 heads more toward the sport end of the spectrum, while the GV80 leans much harder toward luxury. You have to decide what kind of driver you are.
Is the Genesis GV80 a reliable car?
As the time of this writing, there have only been four recalls of the GV80. Two were related to seat belts, one was for a fuel line, and one was for a bad fuel pump.
Is the Genesis GV80 worth the cost?
The GV80, like the G90 sedan, is one of our favorite luxury vehicles. Unlike most vehicles in this class, it’s not trying to convince you it’s sporty or fast. It’s luxurious in the way that a Lincoln Town Car was luxurious. Big heavy doors that close to near silence in the cabin, plush leather seating, wood everywhere. And at the very top end, the GV80 maxes out at $81k. You could spend that much on an F-150.
