| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93% |

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates the four-cylinder EcoBoost will return 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. The V8-powered GT is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined with the automatic transmission.
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: The entry engine is the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic; it suits you if you want the most accessible way into the lineup.
- EcoBoost High Performance: This version adds the Torsen limited-slip differential, leather steering wheel, stickier and larger tires, and upgraded Brembo brake calipers, making it the best-value choice if you want sharper handling and stronger hardware.
- GT: The 5.0-liter V8 brings 480 hp and 415 lb-ft, plus a standard six-speed manual and available 10-speed automatic; it suits you if you want the classic muscle-car experience.
- GT Premium: This trim adds the GT’s V8 character with the more upscale equipment set and is the one to choose if you want the GT Convertible, which is offered only in Premium trim.
- Dark Horse: At the top of the range, this trim produces 500 hp and adds several other performance enhancements for buyers who want the most serious performance focus.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,368 | 33.3% |
| 2025 | 3,342 | 33.7% |
| 2023 | 2,972 | 33% |
| 2020 | 2,261 | 30.5% |
| 2021 | 2,145 | 30.3% |
| 2019 | 2,091 | 30% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, newer features, and a healthy spread of prices. More listings also usually make it easier to compare trims and find the right equipment level for your budget.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?

| 2020 | $26,570 | −4.58% |
| 2016 | $19,475 | −4.26% |
| 2019 | $26,591 | −4.0% |
| 2017 | $21,603 | −3.58% |
| 2018 | $22,690 | −2.75% |
| 2021 | $31,066 | −1.93% |
| 2015 | $20,226 | −0.6% |

| 2023 | $32,739 | +7.25% |

Most model years in the table are down year over year, which creates more opportunity for used buyers. A few years are moving higher, so the market is not moving in one direction across the board. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer listings shown here, while some older and mid-cycle years are still firming up.
The 2015 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2023, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Customers say
Overall, the Ford Mustang consistently impresses drivers with its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and iconic styling throughout the years. Owners frequently praise the exhilarating acceleration, handling, and variety of engine options. The thrilling sound of the V8 engines adds to the driving enjoyment. However, some drivers express concerns about limited backseat space and fuel economy, as well as occasional issues with reliability and build quality in older models. Despite these drawbacks, the Mustang is often celebrated as a beloved classic that offers both excitement and nostalgia.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Ford Mustang stands out because it sits at the end of the sixth generation, a long-running redesign that began for the 2015 model year. That generation kept the Mustang’s coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, added a new electric system for the convertible top, and marked the first time Ford produced and marketed the Mustang for a global audience. It also introduced Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup and an independent rear suspension, both of which helped modernize the car while preserving its rear-wheel-drive character.
For 2023, the Mustang offered a broad range of engines and transmissions, which is part of its appeal. Base cars used Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while other available engines included a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Depending on the engine, buyers could get two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That variety gives the 2023 Mustang a wide performance spread, but shoppers should also know that EcoBoost models are known for oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage.
As a used buy, the 2023 Ford Mustang can be attractive because it combines iconic styling, strong performance, and a relatively recent model-year position in the lineup. CarGurus data puts the average price for a 2023 model at about $32,300. Owners also tend to praise the car’s performance and driving experience, along with its sound system and convertible feature, though some note that it lacks luxury features.
