Used Dodge Colt for Sale near Galveston, TX
Dodge Colt Overview
The Dodge Colt had a twin sister in the Plymouth Colt and siblings in the Mitsubishi Mirage and Eagle Summit. It has gone through many different stylings, most recently as a hatchback, a station wagon, and its final years as either a 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan.
The Dodge Colt was a popular choice for first-time car buyers, families, and economically-conscious drivers who were looking for a car with some zip but that was easy on the bucks in terms of gas and repair costs. The Colt got great mileage and most owners agree it's one of the most reliable cars they've owned, with few major repairs required.
Although some wished for more engine power, the 1.5-liter, 92-horsepower, and later the 1.8-liter, 113-horsepower engines provided enough kick to dart around the city and highways, although it struggled on hills. The fairly plain-looking Colt offered few interior options, but the hatchback models had decent cargo space and roomy front seats.

(68 reviews)1973 Dodge Colt 1600 GS (Mitsubishi Colt galannt). Car came standard in South Africa with a 4 speed gearbox and 2 twin choke downdraft Niki carbs on the single overhead cam shaft Saturn 1600 motor. RPM redline only started at 7200 with the motor happily and easily reaching this with no hesitation through the first three gears. Very quick acceleration, good braking and very predictable handling. Car came std with 165 x 70 x 13 tyres on 13 inch steel rostyle rims. Very stylish and modern design for it's time with excellent build quality. Exceptionally comfortable black vinyl covered bucket type seats with built in headrests and adjustable lumbar support. New off the showroom floor the car cost R2875.00 with the SA Rand approximately one to one with the US Dollar in those days. I was so impressed withh this little car that in 1976 I purchased the new shaped 5 speed version which was also a great, fast, reliable, fun to drive motor car. Ever since 1979 I have been driving Mercedes Benz vehicles. Sedans, 2 door sports coupe and currently in 2010 still the ML SUV, but every day I still miss my little Dodge Colts which were withhout a doubt the best, most fun to drive and trouble free cars that I have had the privilage of owning.
I bought this car in 1986. It was brand new with only 9 miles on it. I kept it for 4 years paid off the car and traded it in with only 27,000 plus miles on it. I never had a problem with it. I rode it back and forth from NJ to NC a few times. No problems. The 4dr sedan premier. It was my first car out of college. Really reliable at the time.
My brother had the misfortune of buying one of these over 20 years ago. At the time, it seemed like a good idea. After all, it's a Japanese car. So how bad could it be? Well, REALLY bad. Although this car probably handled every bit as well as any other small car at the time, the BIG problem was power. Or, shall I say, lack thereof. Now you might say that this isn't a sports car. So power shouldn't really matter. But the problem is that it had SO little power that it was unsafe. Merging was just plain scary. You could almost feel like you are about to meet your maker while passing. And you better get into the slow lane while climbing hills. Other small cars of the day (like the Honda Civic) literally felt like Ferraris compared to this thing! But to add insult to injury, the reliability was just plain HORRIBLE. This thing ate up brakes like they were going out of style. Brake jobs would be required at least TWICE a year. Also, the transmission gave out at somewhere around 60000 miles. And at a little over 100000 miles, the car had basically had it. It started hard, needed to warm up for several minutes before driving away, ran like crap, and smoked from the tailpipe. When climbing a hill, it just wanted to quit. Needless to say, it failed smog. And my brother basically gave the thing away on a trade-in for a Honda CRX (a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better car!). In this day and age, I would be REALLY surprised if someone was actually considering one of these cars. After all, you almost never, ever see them on the road anymore (and I can see why). But if you have found one and ABSOLUTELY need a dirt-cheap small car, look elsewhere. Good used Honda Civics of the era are also dirt-cheap, perform and handle MUCH better, are MUCH more reliable, and look MUCH better.
peppy little mit engine. needs a little work to bring it back to new condition. if i was a american it would make me proud, (red white and blue interior) easy to fix and cheap on gas, fun and comfortable
I LOVED my Colt, it was a burnt orange/brown. It was affectionately called "the turd" by pretty much my whole high school, but it was my phone that rang when my friends cars were broke down. This car had WELL over 200,000 miles on it when I got it, and the only problems I had were normal wear and tear. The only major thing was the front end wouldn't hold an alignment, but Sam's Wholesale loved me cause I bought 2 new tires about every 6 months. When this car was taken from me (by well meaning grandparents) I was driving it about 60 miles one way about 2 or 3 times a week. The man that bought it drove it about 20 mile one way to work daily for years. OH how I wish I still had that car. I look for one for sale all the time.
