Yes — the Chevrolet Malibu is a solid used-car choice if you want a comfortable, value-oriented midsize sedan with easy-to-use tech and a roomy cabin. The all-generations owner rating is 4.3/5 across every model year in the data.

What should I look for when buying a used Chevrolet Malibu?

- Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone projection capability
- Fuel efficiency: 46 mpg in combined driving
Which Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu offers these trims:
- Malibu L: The entry trim starts the lineup and gives you the Malibu's core midsize-sedan formula at the lowest price point.
- LS: A step up from the base model, this trim sits in the middle of the lineup and adds more equipment as you move up.
- LT: This is the best-value trim, balancing price and equipment while keeping the Malibu's roomy, polished character.
- Hybrid: Choose this if you want the Malibu's efficiency-focused setup, including the hybrid powertrain.
- Premier: The top trim adds the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, and it is the trim tied to the Driver Confidence option packages and the most upscale equipment in the 2017 lineup.
What Chevrolet Malibu do most buyers choose?
The Chevrolet Malibu years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 8,487 | 32.4% |

| 2025 | 6,370 | 33.3% |
| 2022 | 3,663 | 28.9% |
| 2021 | 2,550 | 27.6% |
| 2019 | 2,218 | 26.6% |
Higher-volume model years usually give you more listings to compare, which can make it easier to find the right color, trim, mileage, and price combination. They also tend to attract more shopper attention because they sit close to the sweet spot between newer features and used-car pricing.

Reviewed a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu on Mar 1, 2026
I purchased a 2020 Chevy Malibu on February 14th, 2024. Since then, the vehicle has been plagued with issues. The check engine light is constantly on, and when a sensor fails, multiple problems seem to arise. For example, the first time the check engine light appeared, the dash dinged and displayed messages like “steering assist reduced, drive with care,” while all the gauges would jump around. It also showed “low fuel,” despite the tank being full, and the message “service ESC.” The root cause was the throttle body, which needed to be replaced. Subsequently, similar issues occurred, and different parts had to be replaced, including the mass airflow sensor, the accelerator pedal, the brake vacuum pump sensor, the brake vacuum pump, and components related to the charging system. At one point, there was a ground issue. Then there is the constant “shift into park” after parking the car. Overall, this car has been nothing but trouble, and I would not recommend it to anyone.

The car has more features than you think for the price. Heated seats, android and apple auto, a turbo. It's not the pinical of luxury, but it definitely gives you enough if you are on a budget.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a roomy, value-oriented midsize sedan with a long-running reputation for being easy to live with. By this point in its life cycle, it was part of the Malibu’s final generation, and the car’s appeal centered on practical strengths rather than flash: a comfortable cabin, straightforward features, and pricing that tended to undercut rivals like the Camry and Accord. It also benefited from the Malibu’s later-generation improvements in refinement and reliability, which helped make it a more convincing family sedan than earlier versions.
For 2023, the Malibu was essentially a carry-over model from 2022, so its strengths were familiar. The standard 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder produced 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rated at 30 mpg combined. Buyers could also find the Malibu’s available safety and driver-assistance equipment, though many of those features were not standard earlier in the generation. The car’s infotainment setup included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and later-model Malibus also benefited from wireless smartphone connectivity.
The tradeoff is that the 2023 Malibu was not especially exciting to drive, and it still lagged behind some competitors in refinement. Its standard engine was described as lackluster in acceleration, and the Malibu’s overall appeal was more about value, space, and ease of use than performance. Even so, for shoppers who wanted a large, comfortable sedan with a strong price advantage and a proven formula, the 2023 Chevrolet Malibu remained an appealing choice.
