The Chevrolet Caprice has generally garnered a positive response from owners across its many years, noted for its powerful performance, spacious interiors, and comfortable rides. Drivers appreciate the durability and reliability, often mentioning the fun driving experience that comes with its robust engines. However, some common complaints include sluggish acceleration in certain models, outdated design features, and issues with fuel economy, especially during heavy use. Overall, the Caprice is cherished as a classic car that balances power and comfort well, though it may not be the most economical option for daily driving.

The 1971 Caprice is a great example of early ’70’s Detroit. This is an example of what cars were like before imports like Toyota and Honda began to influence designers of American cars. This car is big, fast and runs beautifully. The experience of driving a car like this is completely different from a modern-day vehicle. Today, cars are engineered to provide a “responsive” feel, which loosely translated means even the smallest bumps in the road are felt by the driver and the passengers. Not so of early ‘70’s cars like the Caprice. The ride is smooth and on even bumpy roads, you’re not shaken and jarred around like with today’s cars. A review I read online described the ride quality as "vaguely nautical," which I agree with wholeheartedly. The ’71 Caprice is happiest on the open highway, where it truly is the king of the road. Sitting behind the wheel, looking over the enormous hood as you glide effortlessly along is a lot of fun. While the car performs great around town I would never take this car into the city because its size makes navigating in traffic a little tricky. The Caprice is a good example of when Detroit believed that “bigger is better.” The car boasts a wheelbase of 121.5 inches. It’s a very big car with an interior and trunk that are best described as cavernous. As would be expected the mileage is not good. Because the Caprice is strictly for fun I seldom drive it and haven’t measured the mileage it gets. However I do believe it to be roughly 9 MPG in city driving and about 11 or 12 MPG on the highway. This is with the original 8-cylinder 400 ci engine. Gas was $0.29 per gallon in 1971 so fuel economy was not a concern to the designers of this car. For anyone looking for a great example of Detroit iron back when bigger was better, I’d recommend the Caprice or it’s twin the Impala any day.
I have 207,000 miles on this one and the only major mechanical work it has needed was a transmission rebuild at 115,000.
this is our daily driver. you don't see these big wagons on the road anymore and that's a shame. me and my gf think that these eighties gm wagons are the best cars ever made. you can get one with 1000 euros or less. the original oldsmobile 307 engine is a wimp but when all the electrical and vacuum-things are working it's got a really nice low-end torque and very good gas mileage. spare parts are cheap and you can get them everywhere. but most of all, these wagons are fun to drive even if it is just a family car. small history lesson: the reason finland has a lot of these wagons is because of taxes and registeration. from sixties to june of 1990 you could import a CARGO CARRIER completely tax-free! and what makes a car cargo carrier? the size of cargo space off course. and if the car weighted over 1800 kilograms the size didn't matter. so you could get these wagons with a price of toyota corolla. the limitations of cargo carriers were another thing. you could only have the front seat and top speed was limited to 80kmh (52mph). these was no speedlimiter onboard, just a sticker in the rear. from 1988 to june 1990 there was a law that allowed an additional rear seat of 3 people for TEMPORARY USE ONLY. the seat had to be in 90 degree angle and it couldn't be thicker than 5cm (2") and that 5cm means the building material, stuffing and upholstery. when the rearseat law was passed, they started importin these wagons like crazy. brand new buicks, chevys, olds and pontiacs were bought and rear seats ripped apart. the government stopped that crazyness in june 1990. today all of the cargo carrier, plankseat cars are shunned by the community and everyone thinks you should drive a corolla or a volvo and wear shellsuit. but not me
With a 5.7 TBI (Throttle Body Intake) 350ci the Caprice Classic has fast acceleration for a larger and heavier car. With a spacious cabin and trunk it is no wonder it was the premium choice for police and law enforcement agencies for years even after thier retirement from the chevrolet line. With sleek bodylines and a luxury ride on the long haul it requires less maintenance than it's counterpart that carries the LT4 Corvette motor. With over 280 Horsepower the top speed of 233 Miles Per Hour. Reasonable Fuel Economy for its size. Definitely a Blues Brother Car for fun.
I absolutely hated this car when I was just starting to drive it to school its a family car(I was young). However as I drove the car more and more I loved it. It got me where I needed to go and when I felt like really hitting the gas the power was there when I needed it. Its a great buy for somebody who wants a good work car for hauling materials, etc. Its a very large car but it makes up for it in dependability and safety. Its very solid , it has driver side air bags, and ABS.
