About the BMW X6

Based on the BMW X5 midsize luxury SUV, the X6 distinguishes itself from its fraternal twin with a sporty coupe-like profile. Many modern crossovers and SUVs showcase this design element, but the X6 is the fabled pioneer of the swooping roofline. The two-row crossover has an upscale cabin with creature comforts and in-car tech for five passengers. The X6 is available with sporty and sport-tuned drivetrains along with standard all-wheel drive (AWD).

What are the advantages of the BMW X6?

The X6 features a distinctive exterior design that is matched with a well-appointed cabin. Amenity-laden, the X6 interior is outfitted with plush upholstery matched with elegant wood and metal trims. Also, even on its entry model, the X6 is commended for its impressive dynamics and smooth ride quality.

What is the best BMW X6 model year?

In production since 2008, the U.S.-built BMW X6 was a winner from the get-go. The X6 has not been bombarded with a notable number of consumer complaints or recalls. If anything, the consensus has been which model year to avoid. Of the issues that were experienced, the majority were associated with the 2011 X6. Problems included engine overheating and a faulty tire pressure monitoring system.

What are the disadvantages of the BMW X6?

The rakish roofline of the X6 is stylish but at the sacrifice of rear headroom, cargo space, and overall practicality. Its design also means smaller windows for the C-pillar and rear liftgate, which results in poor rearward visibility. Also, being a BMW, the X6 is equipped with an advanced infotainment system that can be overwhelming to operate due to an extensive level of settings, menus, and options.

Comparison: Is the BMW X6 better than the BMW X5?

The X5 and X6 are built in the same plant and share the same platform, but are very different in appeal and audience. The BMW X5 carries the distinction of being the German automaker’s first-ever SUV. With that comes the responsibility of being everything to almost everyone. The X5 comes with a choice of drive configurations (e.g., rear- and all-wheel drive) and powertrains (e.g., gasoline, plug-in hybrid). With a traditional SUV shape, the X5 also offers more interior volume for people and cargo than the X6.

On the flip side, the X6 eschews functionality because it has the looks, luxury, and performance to do so. But with such bravado comes a price. The walk from the base X5 to the top-end X6 is in the tens of thousands of dollars. Want something with purpose? Opt for the X5. Want something to talk about, though? That would be the X6.

Is the BMW X6 a reliable car?

Thanks to high-quality production and consumer experience, the X6 ranks first in its segment for predicted reliability and ownership costs.

Is the BMW X6 worth the cost?

When available add-ons and packages are optioned, the X6 easily crosses the six-figure mark. And that can be a tough pill to swallow, especially for what’s basically a midsize crossover. Although there is nothing basic about the X6, the midsize luxury SUV segment is one of the fastest-growing, which is favorable for consumers but possibly humbling for the X6.
