Key things to evaluate:
- Infotainment: The X5’s BMW Curved Display contains a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen under a single, sweeping piece of glass.
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA rating is 19 mpg, and we saw between 16.4 mpg and 21.1 mpg in different conditions. BMW does offer more fuel-efficient options, including the sDrive40i and xDrive40i rated at 25 mpg combined, and the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, with 38 miles of electric range.
Which BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2026 BMW X5 offers these trims:
- sDrive40i: The rear-wheel-drive entry point, with the BMW Curved Display, iDrive 8.5, and the X5’s core luxury-suv character.
- xDrive40i: Adds all-wheel drive for buyers who want the same six-cylinder setup with extra traction.
- xDrive50e: The plug-in hybrid choice, adding AWD and 38 miles of electric range; this is the best-value trim for shoppers who want efficiency and everyday versatility.
- M60i: The performance-focused V8 model, adding 532 horsepower, 553 pound-feet of torque, and a 4.2-second 0-60 mph claim.
- X5 M Competition: The top performance model, bringing the most aggressive hardware and the highest-output positioning in the lineup.
What BMW X5 do most buyers choose?
The BMW X5 years with the most listings are 2025, 2026, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 5,150 | 35.7% |
| 2026 | 3,516 | 34.9% |
| 2023 | 3,404 | 38.3% |
| 2024 | 3,329 | 38.5% |
| 2027 | 2,684 | 33.3% |
| 2022 | 2,509 | 39.3% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also often sit close to the sweet spot between newer features and used-car pricing.
What is the BMW X5's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $35,654 | −14.38% |
| 2023 | $40,625 | −14.31% |
| 2025 | $57,849 | −13.96% |
| 2018 | $17,166 | −13.67% |
| 2021 | $31,221 | −13.66% |
| 2020 | $27,026 | −12.12% |
| 2019 | $24,739 | −12.12% |
| 2017 | $15,329 | −10.48% |
| 2015 | $12,383 | −10.27% |
| 2016 | $13,716 | −10.03% |
| 2024 | $51,136 | −9.3% |
| 2014 | $11,900 | −9.01% |
| 2026 | $70,850 | −5.5% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it opens up more value across the lineup. The biggest drops are in the double digits, while the newest model year shows the smallest decline in the table. That pattern suggests newer X5s are softening more slowly than many older ones, even as prices continue to ease overall.
The 2026, 2014, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Powertrain/efficiency: BMW offers a variety of six-cylinder and eight-cylinder powertrains in the X5. Our M60i test car was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, accelerating to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, according to BMW. That speed is courtesy of 532 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, and BMW does offer more fuel-efficient options, including the sDrive40i and xDrive40i rated at 25 mpg combined, and the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, with 38 miles of electric range.
- Tech: The X5’s BMW Curved Display contains a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen under a single, sweeping piece of glass. The iDrive 8.5 infotainment system is well stocked with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, a cloud-based navigation system, and a number of connected services.
- Safety: The 2026 BMW X5 comes standard with high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors in the front, to the side, and at the rear.
- Starting price: The BMW X5 lineup includes prices ranging from $69,750 to $132,450, including destination.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

One of the best vehicles I have ever owned. From the older BMWs to the newer Cadillacs. Technology is outstanding. There are things I haven’t even done yet. Great investment.

I think this car is way too overpriced for the features and the condition. Considering it has almost 90k miles, and with the base packaging, this should be somewhere around 16-18k at the dealership assuming no technical or mechanical issues observed with the car. Almost 21k is crazy. The car does not have: M package Premium plus package, whatever that was called that gives you multi controllable seats, shade screens on the back 360 camera and all the other good stuff. The car seemed factory base model, with no features. So 21k is way too expensive.

The SUV exceeds our expectations. From comfort to safety to style this BMW hit all points! My wife loves the sensors around the vehicle making her aware of any obstacles before incident. Overall this was our number one choice and happy with it. We also looked at the XC90, Grand Cherokee, GV80.

Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that blends strong performance with a refined, comfortable cabin. BMW’s fourth-generation X5 brought more room inside, a pair of 12.3-inch digital displays, and the latest iDrive infotainment system, while continuing to offer turbocharged inline six-cylinder and V8 engines with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission. That combination helps explain why the X5 has long appealed to buyers who want an SUV that still feels rewarding to drive.
For 2022, the X5 also sat in a generation that had already added a plug-in hybrid option and Android Auto support, though the model year was affected by microchip shortages that left some features unavailable. The X5’s strengths are easy to understand: it is roomy, comfortable, and well equipped, and owners often praise its smooth ride, strong engine performance, and upscale interior. At the same time, it is not the most economical choice, especially with V8 power, and its ownership costs can be high as it ages.
