Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: BMW’s standard driver-assistance suite includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, evasive-steering assist, adaptive cruise control, automated lane centering, and safe-exit assist.
• Infotainment: BMW’s new infotainment concept combines the display-only Panoramic Vision screen at the base of the windshield with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and optional 14.6-inch front-passenger touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: BMW is launching the redesigned 2027 X5 with two powertrains. A turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is used in the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) X5 40 and all-wheel drive (AWD) X5 40 xDrive, coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine runs on the Miller cycle to improve efficiency and is teamed with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to further reduce fuel consumption. But output is still 394 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, which is 19 hp and 45 lb-ft of torque more than in the outgoing X5. BMW estimates 44 miles of electric range for the 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, four miles more than the 2026 model.

Which BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2027 BMW X5 offers these trims:

• X5 40: The rear-wheel-drive version starts the lineup with the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, eight-speed automatic, adaptive damping, and BMW’s new Panoramic Vision display and 17.9-inch touchscreen. It suits you if you want the entry point to the redesigned X5 with the core luxury and driving character.
• X5 40 xDrive: This all-wheel-drive version adds AWD to the same inline-six setup and is the best-value trim if you want the X5’s balanced mix of performance, comfort, and all-weather confidence.
• X5 50e xDrive: This plug-in hybrid adds the electric motor and 26.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack for 483 hp, 516 lb-ft, and BMW-estimated 44 miles of electric range. It suits you if you want the most efficient and most powerful mainstream X5 in the lineup.

What BMW X5 do most buyers choose?

The BMW X5 years with the most listings are 2025, 2026, and 2023.

Higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, more pricing spread to work with, and a better chance of finding the trim and equipment mix you want.

What is the BMW X5's resale value?

Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it means prices have softened across much of the lineup. The biggest drops are concentrated in recent and mid-cycle model years, while a few older examples show smaller declines. That pattern gives you more room to find value if you’re flexible on model year and trim.

The 2026, 2016, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
