Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW M3 stands out for its exceptional versatility, combining the thrill of a high-performance sports car with the practicality of a four-door sedan. Equipped with a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine that delivers over 500 horsepower, it ensures exhilarating acceleration and driving dynamics that few competitors can match. Additionally, the integration of BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system enhances traction and stability, making it suitable for both daily driving and spirited track sessions.
Other model years to consider
The 2024 and 2025 BMW M3 model years present solid value, featuring robust user ratings of 5/5 and expert ratings of 8.5/10, respectively. Both years also benefit from a high availability of good or great deals at 41%, making them appealing options for buyers looking for modern performance vehicles. Meanwhile, the 2017 model year offers excellent value as well, with an average price of approximately $43,885 and a perfect user rating of 5/5, supported by a decent deal availability rate of 28%.
Model years to approach with caution
The BMW M3 model years showcase varying user feedback and market positioning. The 1991 and 1995 models stand out with high user ratings of 4.8/5, indicating strong owner satisfaction, while more recent models like the 2022 version show a decline in user ratings to 3.7/5 despite higher price points. Additionally, the majority of models from the mid-2000s exhibit similar patterns with notable percentages of users reporting that deals may not be favorable, suggesting careful consideration is warranted when evaluating these options for value.

What people say
Immense torque, futuristic dash, so easy to drive when you need it to be and incredibly raw when you ask it to be. Gorgeous car inside and out
I have owned a 2011 E92 M3 Competition Package for just shy of 5 years. This car has been nothing shy of a dream come true and I fully understand why they are becoming more and more sought after. 2011 was the first Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) year for the E9X M3 Coupe, and the first year that the Competition Package was offered. You cant go wrong with any year from 2008 - 2013, but 2011+ is typically deemed the most desirable with the various changes that were made for LCI that make it feel a little less dated. Whether you are a fan of the engaging 6-speed manual, or the very fast and sporty Dual Clutch, you are making the right choice either way. The options that were offered on this generation M3 made it very bespoke and its rare to find a car with the same exact specifications - this makes it that much more special to own. The driving experience is like none other. The high-revving 4.0L naturally-aspirated V8 is addicting. Even though this platform cant compete with cars that are being produced today in terms of speed & acceleration, the pure driving feel is enough to put power & torque on the sidelines and just enjoy driving the car. Even after 5 years of ownership, I have never been able to push the car to its limit, but a competent driver is always right on the edge of too far. The current generation M3s have too much power where you really cant use nearly all of it safely. The E9X M3 chassis was truly the perfect just the right amount to enjoy on the edge, but never feel unsafe doing so. I cant say enough good things about this car, and everyone who has owned a well taken care of example (hint hint) knows that you dont just own one of these cars, you are a caretaker of what I absolutely consider the best generation M3 ever built.
I had the opportunity to own one of these for a few months and it was a 10/10 experience. This car possesses an engine that nowadays is only seen in the Porsche 911 GT3, this 4.0L V8 will always put a smile on your face. I daily drove an E93 for a few months and it was a great experience. It offers a great bang for buck performance option that if you are skilled with working on BMWs can be a fantastic performance car. The seats are comfortable, the DCT is snappy and responsive and I would personally take it over the manual ( I have driven multiple manuals). The exterior design is functional, refined and modest compared to its contemporary counterpart. The handling is greatly improved over the E46 Convertibles and outside of track use, the handling difference would be hardly noticeable compared to the E92. This is not a car you own if you care about fuel economy or neglecting maintenance. If you daily drive, you will be filling up twice a week. This is not a car where you can skip maintenance, as it will become costly. If you are not a technician then expect to pay more in maintenance, especially for rod bearings. If you are not doing the repairs yourself, I would budget 5000 for annual maintenance and take it to a reputable independent BMW shop. My recommendation when looking at these cars is finding one with good recent service history. Most of the issues with these cars are over exaggerated and can be overwhelming to think about when looking but if you find the right car with the right history you will be smiling all the way to 8500 rpms.
Awesome is the feeling I get at 140 miles mph. The best M series ever E46
This M3 was so incredibly clean and like new and more than worth the premium price with low mileage and a perfect pre-inspection. I just drove it home from Detroit to Louisville and loved every minute of it.
BMW M3 FAQs
Are used BMW M3s reliable?
The BMW M3 is known for its high-performance capabilities, but its reliability can be a mixed bag. While these cars are engineered to deliver thrilling driving experiences, they also require diligent maintenance and care. Issues can arise, especially as the vehicle ages, but with proper upkeep, a used BMW M3 can still be a reliable and exhilarating car. It’s essential to check the vehicle’s service history and ensure it has been well-maintained by previous owners.
Does the BMW M3 hold value?
The BMW M3 tends to hold its value well, especially compared to many other high-performance cars. This is partly due to its iconic status among enthusiasts and its reputation for delivering a blend of luxury and performance. While it may not have the highest resale value in its class, it remains a solid investment, particularly for those looking to enjoy a premium driving experience and sell it later without significant depreciation.
Is the BMW M3 a good car to buy?
The BMW M3 is an excellent choice for those who crave a dynamic driving experience combined with everyday practicality. It offers a powerful engine, sharp handling, and the option of a manual transmission, making it a favorite among driving enthusiasts. Despite its performance-oriented nature, the M3 is comfortable enough for daily commuting. However, potential buyers should be prepared for the high costs associated with maintenance and repairs, which are common for luxury performance cars.
Why is the M3 so expensive?
BMW M3s, particularly the rare and limited-edition models like the M3 Sport Evolution, command high prices due to their exclusivity and performance pedigree. These cars are not only highly sought after by collectors but also represent a pinnacle of BMW’s engineering and motorsport heritage. The combination of limited production numbers, historical significance, and high demand keeps the prices elevated, especially for well-preserved examples.
Is the F80 M3 discontinued?
Yes, the F80 BMW M3 was discontinued earlier than anticipated, largely due to new emissions testing regulations, specifically the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). This regulatory change prompted BMW to cease production of the F80 M3 in August 2018. However, the M3 legacy continues with newer models that build on the performance and heritage of their predecessors.
