Which BMW M3 trim should I buy?
The 2025 BMW M3 offers...
- BMW M3: This is the best-value starting point if you want the core M3 formula: a six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive with an M-tuned limited-slip differential, adaptive dampers, nearly 480 hp, and a comfortable, chic interior. It also brings 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels, making it the trim to target if you want the classic enthusiast setup.
- Competition: This trim adds just over 500 hp, an eight-speed automatic, and bigger wheels, making it the right pick if you want more power and an automatic transmission.
- Competition xDrive: This version adds BMW’s grippy and configurable xDrive drivetrain, pairing the Competition hardware with all-wheel drive for the most traction-focused setup in the lineup.
What BMW M3 do most buyers choose?
The BMW M3 years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 341 | 32.6% |
| 2025 | 301 | 34.6% |
| 2023 | 293 | 30.4% |
| 2022 | 218 | 30.7% |
| 2026 | 184 | 37.5% |
| 2017 | 179 | 31.3% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more shopping choice, which can make it easier to compare prices, colors, and equipment. They also tend to be the years most buyers are already cross-shopping, so inventory stays active.
What is the BMW M3's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $73,562 | −3.73% |
| 2023 | $82,311 | −3.43% |

| 2021 | $69,930 | −0.99% |
| 2018 | $56,198 | +1.11% |
Most of the years in this table are moving lower year over year, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The changes are fairly modest for the newer years, while one older year is moving slightly higher.
The 2021 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.

I had the opportunity to own one of these for a few months and it was a 10/10 experience. This car possesses an engine that nowadays is only seen in the Porsche 911 GT3, this 4.0L V8 will always put a smile on your face. I daily drove an E93 for a few months and it was a great experience. It offers a great bang for buck performance option that if you are skilled with working on BMWs can be a fantastic performance car. The seats are comfortable, the DCT is snappy and responsive and I would personally take it over the manual ( I have driven multiple manuals). The exterior design is functional, refined and modest compared to its contemporary counterpart. The handling is greatly improved over the E46 Convertibles and outside of track use, the handling difference would be hardly noticeable compared to the E92. This is not a car you own if you care about fuel economy or neglecting maintenance. If you daily drive, you will be filling up twice a week. This is not a car where you can skip maintenance, as it will become costly. If you are not a technician then expect to pay more in maintenance, especially for rod bearings. If you are not doing the repairs yourself, I would budget 5000 for annual maintenance and take it to a reputable independent BMW shop. My recommendation when looking at these cars is finding one with good recent service history. Most of the issues with these cars are over exaggerated and can be overwhelming to think about when looking but if you find the right car with the right history you will be smiling all the way to 8500 rpms.

This M3 was so incredibly clean and like new and more than worth the premium price with low mileage and a perfect pre-inspection. I just drove it home from Detroit to Louisville and loved every minute of it.

Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW M3 stands out because it tries to be several kinds of car at once. It is described as a sports car, a family car, and a luxury car in a single package, which gives it a broader appeal than a machine focused on just one job. That versatility is a major part of its identity, and it helps explain why it can attract buyers looking for performance without giving up everyday usefulness or a more upscale feel.
Its strongest appeal is how satisfying it is to drive, along with the high build quality and impressive materials inside. Those qualities make it feel special beyond its performance credentials, and the car is presented as well worth the money despite not coming cheap. The main drawbacks are also clear: its design may be polarizing, its technology can be unintuitive, and road noise can be intrusive.
