Used BMW 8 Series prices span a wide range depending on model year. Here's what the market looks like right now:

The BMW 8 Series's current nationwide average price is $62,193, and its nationwide average price reached a low of $59,365 over the past year. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.

Is the BMW 8 Series a good car?

Yes — the BMW 8 Series is a strong choice if you want a luxury grand tourer with style, performance, and a premium-feeling cabin. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.

Are BMW 8 Series models reliable?

• Owners rate the BMW 8 Series between 4.2 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied more to upkeep costs and complexity than to the car’s core appeal, so a well-documented service history matters.

Which BMW 8 Series trim should I buy?

The 2023 BMW 8 Series offers these trims:

• 840i: The entry point brings the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 335 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic; it suits you if you want the core 8 Series experience at the most accessible level.
• 840i xDrive: This version adds all-wheel drive to the 840i formula, giving you the same six-cylinder power with extra traction.
• M850i xDrive: This trim adds the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, plus AWD and the more aggressive performance character that comes with it.
• M8 Competition: This is the high-performance choice, with 617 hp, an M-specific eight-speed automatic, AWD, and the quickest acceleration in the lineup.
• Alpina B8 Gran Coupe: This Gran Coupe adds 612 hp from a tuned 4.4-liter V8 and a more luxurious character, making it the best fit if you want high speed with a grand-touring focus.

What BMW 8 Series do most buyers choose?

The BMW 8 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.

Higher-volume years usually give you more choice in trims, colors, and pricing, which makes them the easiest places to start your search. They also tend to be the years where you can compare more listings side by side and find a better match for your budget.

What is the BMW 8 Series's resale value?

The table shows broad downward movement across the lineup, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. Several years have seen double-digit or near-double-digit drops, while the smallest declines are still meaningful enough to improve affordability. The pattern also suggests that newer model years have seen some of the sharpest price movement.

The 2019, 2023, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the BMW 8 Series safe?

• 2023: 6/10
• 2021: 8/10
• 2020: 8/10
