Is the BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the BMW 3 Series is a strong used-car choice if you want a premium sedan with real driving character and broad appeal. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.

Expert reviews rate the 2023 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs across recent expert-tested years center on a snug cabin, front seat comfort on longer trips, and technology naming that can feel confusing. Even so, the 3 Series remains a compelling used luxury sedan because it blends performance, refinement, and everyday usability so well.
31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 3 Series models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the BMW 3 Series for its sporty driving feel, strong performance, and upscale cabin character. Across the model years in the data, it also earns frequent praise for handling, comfort, and a premium overall experience.
- Owners rate the BMW 3 Series between 4.1 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example and reviewing service history carefully, since upkeep can be a meaningful part of ownership.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 3 Series?
Across all model years, at 72.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 95.7% |
| 2025 | 94% |
| 2024 | 89% |
| 2023 | 86.3% |
| 2022 | 80.5% |
| 2021 | 71.9% |
| 2020 | 69.5% |
| 2019 | 62.1% |
| 2018 | 56.2% |
| 2017 | 52.7% |
| 2016 | 53.8% |
| 2015 | 54.8% |
| 2014 | 55.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Active Protection System, Active Guard, Active Driving Assistant, Driving Assistance Package, and Driving Assistance Professional Package
- Infotainment: BMW Operating System 8.5 (iDrive 8.5) with a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, iDrive controls, and BMW Intelligent Assistant voice recognition
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA fuel economy rating is 31 mpg in combined driving.
Which BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2025 BMW 3 Series offers these trims:
- 330i: The entry point, with the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, and the core 3 Series driving feel.
- 330i xDrive: Adds BMW’s all-wheel-drive system for buyers who want extra traction.
- M340i xDrive: Brings the inline-six and a clear jump in performance for shoppers who want a faster, more powerful setup.
- M3: The performance flagship for buyers who want the most serious driving hardware in the lineup.
What BMW 3 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 3 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2026.
Higher-volume model years tend to be the easiest place to shop because you get more inventory to compare, which can help you find the right color, mileage, and equipment mix. They also tend to offer more pricing competition among sellers.
What is the BMW 3 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | $24,904 | −10.74% |
| 2025 | $40,546 | −10.47% |
| 2016 | $11,780 | −8.41% |
| 2020 | $23,598 | −8.23% |
| 2022 | $28,185 | −7.9% |
| 2015 | $10,282 | −7.7% |
| 2023 | $33,822 | −7.55% |
| 2019 | $20,157 | −6.1% |
| 2017 | $13,441 | −5.55% |
| 2018 | $15,013 | −5.51% |
| 2014 | $10,070 | −1.23% |
| 2024 | $36,772 | −0.21% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it points to softer pricing across much of the lineup. The biggest drops are concentrated in several recent and mid-cycle years, while a few older years show smaller changes. That makes the market especially attractive if you want a newer 3 Series without paying close to original pricing.
The 2024 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2024, 2014, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW 3 Series stands out as a refreshed version of BMW’s best-selling car, with sportier styling, interior design updates, and technology upgrades. It keeps the formula that has made the 3 Series so appealing while sharpening the look and modernizing the cabin, giving it a more current feel without losing its sports-sedan identity.
For buyers, the 2023 model’s strengths are easy to see in its stylish design, great ride quality, and quiet cabin. Those qualities make it attractive as an everyday luxury sedan that still aims to feel engaging. The main drawbacks are also clear: a manual transmission is not available, and some interior materials feel cheap, which may matter to shoppers expecting a more premium finish.
