Why it stands out
The 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata stands out because it stays true to the roadster formula that made the name famous: a small, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive two-seater built for driving enjoyment rather than outright speed. Mazda’s formula gives it quick steering, strong feedback, and a chassis that feels lively and athletic, which is a big part of the car’s appeal. It also has a reputation for excellent long-term reliability, and that combination of fun and durability is a major reason the Miata has remained so popular.
For 2026, the MX-5 Miata is offered with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Mazda also fits an 8.8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and in recent years the car has included standard automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Buyers can choose between the cloth-top roadster and the RF, which uses a removable hardtop with buttresses and a removable targa top; the RF is quieter on the highway, though it weighs more than the soft-top version.
The Miata’s strengths are clear, but so are its compromises. It has a tiny cabin, very limited cargo room, and the soft-top version can be loud inside. It can also feel jittery and twitchy on the highway because of its short wheelbase and firm suspension. Even so, for shoppers who want an affordable sports car that is engaging, dependable, and easy to live with as a second car, the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata remains one of the most distinctive choices available.
