Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 earns a 7.2/10 expert rating, and it is aimed at you if you value style, interior quality, and value in a compact SUV. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Mazda’s redesign gives the CX-5 a striking new exterior, a more upscale cabin, standard all-wheel drive, and Google built-in across the lineup. It also grows in size, so you get more rear passenger space and cargo room than before.

The trade-offs are just as clear: the carried-over 187-horsepower engine and six-speed automatic feel dated, and the powertrain is a weak point in a class where rivals increasingly offer hybrids and more modern transmissions. If you want a polished, well-equipped compact SUV and can live with modest performance and efficiency, it makes sense. If you want stronger acceleration or better fuel economy, you may want to look elsewhere.

Good and great deals account for 36.9% of listings, which suggests there’s still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is presented as a familiar, carryover mechanical package wrapped in a major redesign, which is a good sign for long-term predictability. Mazda also keeps the drivetrain simple with a naturally aspirated four-cylinder and a six-speed automatic, rather than adding a more complex setup.

The expert test drive data also points to a durable, straightforward performance character rather than a high-strung one. That can be reassuring if you want a used SUV that should be easier to live with over time.

Mazda’s standard warranty coverage is average for the segment, so long-term ownership risk for used buyers is mainly tied to the aging transmission, the underpowered engine, and fuel costs rather than any obvious complexity premium.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mazda CX-5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and how the drivetrain feels in normal driving, since the powertrain is one of the CX-5’s weaker points. It’s also worth checking that the tech and driver-assistance features work as expected, because this model leans heavily on standard equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5 S gets standard AWD, Google built-in, and a strong safety suite, but the 2.5 S Preferred is the best-value choice because it adds 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, a head-up display, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 10-way power driver’s seat with memory.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses the same carryover 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and a six-speed automatic, so you should expect modest acceleration and average efficiency rather than strong performance.
• Safety package: Every trim includes adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with Turn-Across Traffic detection and Head-On Collision Mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the rear-view camera.
• Infotainment: The base trim gets a 12.9-inch touchscreen, while the top Premium Plus uses a 15.6-inch unit. Google built-in is standard, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired on the base trim and wireless on Select and above, and all trims get a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.
• Fuel efficiency: The CX-5 is rated at 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 combined mpg, which is the same across the lineup.

Which 2026 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Premium, Premium Plus.

Here’s the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the entry point if you want the lowest price and still want standard AWD, Google built-in, and the full standard safety suite.
• Select: This is the first step up if you want wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most meaningful everyday upgrades, including a power liftgate, head-up display, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power driver’s seat with memory.
• Premium: Choose this if you want a more upscale audio and convenience setup, including the Bose 12-speaker system and SiriusXM satellite radio.
• Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the largest screen, the 360-degree View Monitor, driver monitoring, rear USB-C ports, and the most advanced highway-assist features.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the Premium Plus adds the most advanced driver-assistance hardware.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting huge discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,229 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 92.7% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2026 CX-5 comes with one of the most comprehensive standard safety suites in its class.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every trim includes adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with Turn-Across Traffic detection and Head-On Collision Mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the mandatory rear-view camera.

The Premium Plus adds an adaptive front-lighting system, front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, Cruising & Traffic Support with Lane-Change Assist, a driver monitoring system, and a 360-degree View Monitor. Seven airbags come standard across all trims.

Should I buy a 2026 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The redesign brings a more upscale look, standard AWD, and Google built-in across the lineup.

Consider the 2025 if:

• The 2025 is a sportier, more engaging compact SUV with a practical, upscale feel.

The bottom line: Buy the 2026 if you want the newest design, more tech, and standard AWD at a competitive price. If you’re more focused on driving enjoyment and want to shop the older model for value, the 2025 remains the better fallback.
