Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 earns a 7.2/10 expert rating, and it’s aimed at you if you value style, interior quality, and value in a compact SUV. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10. Mazda’s redesign gives it a striking new exterior, a more upscale cabin, standard all-wheel drive, and Google built-in as standard, which helps it feel more advanced than many rivals.

The trade-offs are just as clear: the carried-over 187-horsepower engine feels underpowered, and the six-speed automatic transmission is dated for the class. It also loses ground to competitors on efficiency, which makes it a better fit if you care more about design and everyday refinement than quick acceleration or fuel savings.

With 42.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market looks favorable if you’re shopping now.

Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

The 2026 CX-5’s redesign brings a larger body structure, updated crumple zones, and expanded safety hardware, which supports its case as a solid long-term bet. Mazda also gives you standard all-wheel drive across the lineup, and the cabin and chassis updates suggest a more mature, better-developed vehicle than the outgoing model.

The powertrain story is less reassuring for long-term ownership. The carryover 2.5-liter engine and six-speed automatic are both familiar, but they’re also part of what makes the CX-5 feel dated and less efficient than rivals. Mazda’s broader ownership pitch is helped by the standard warranty coverage, and the model’s premium feel should hold up well if you keep up with maintenance.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that you’ll live with a drivetrain that feels behind the class for both performance and fuel economy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mazda CX-5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and verify that the vehicle’s condition matches its mileage and asking price. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you’re comparing trims with different equipment levels. Focus on cabin wear, wheel condition, and whether the features you want are actually present on the specific vehicle you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5 S uses 17-inch wheels and wired phone integration, while higher trims add larger wheels, a more premium cabin, and more convenience features. The base trim is also where you’ll notice the biggest feature gaps.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses the same carryover 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and a six-speed automatic, so acceleration and efficiency are the same across the lineup.
• Safety package: Every trim includes adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with Turn-Across Traffic detection and Head-On Collision Mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the rear-view camera. The Premium Plus adds an adaptive front-lighting system, front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, Cruising & Traffic Support with Lane-Change Assist, a driver monitoring system, and a 360-degree View Monitor.
• Infotainment: All trims get Google built-in and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. The base 2.5 S has wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Select and above get wireless connectivity. Most trims use a 12.9-inch touchscreen, and the Premium Plus upgrades to a 15.6-inch screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The CX-5 is rated at 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 combined mpg.

Which 2026 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Premium, and 2.5 S Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with standard AWD, Google built-in, and the full safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and don’t need extra comfort or convenience features.
• 2.5 S Select: This trim adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it a smarter everyday choice if you want easier phone integration without moving too far up the price ladder.
• 2.5 S Preferred: This is the best-value trim. It adds AWD, 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, a head-up display, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 10-way power driver’s seat with memory. If you want the sweet spot, this is the one to target.
• 2.5 S Premium: This trim brings a Bose 12-speaker audio system and SiriusXM satellite radio, so it suits you if cabin sound quality matters more than pure value.
• 2.5 S Premium Plus: This is the most feature-rich version, with a larger 15.6-inch screen, a 360-degree View Monitor with underfloor and parking views, a driver monitoring system, rear USB-C ports, and an adaptive front-lighting system. It’s the pick if you want the most tech and convenience.

The Premium Plus also adds the most advanced safety and driver-assistance hardware in the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mazda CX-5?

• Clean inventory: 92.4% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2026 CX-5 comes with one of the most comprehensive standard safety suites in its class. It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every trim includes adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with Turn-Across Traffic detection and Head-On Collision Mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the mandatory rear-view camera.

The Premium Plus adds an adaptive front-lighting system, front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, Cruising & Traffic Support with Lane-Change Assist, a driver monitoring system, and a 360-degree View Monitor. Seven airbags come standard across all trims.

Should I buy a 2026 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 42.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• It brings a full redesign with standard AWD, Google built-in, and a more upscale cabin.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It blends practicality with a more engaging driving character than many rivals.

The bottom line: Choose the 2026 if you want the newest CX-5 design, the most advanced tech, and standard AWD at a competitive price. If you’re more price-sensitive and can live with the older generation’s smaller footprint, the 2025 remains the better value play for buyers who want a sporty, upscale compact SUV without paying for the redesign.
