New & Used 2026 Land Rover Defender for Sale nearIthaca, NY

Is the 2026 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2026 Land Rover Defender earns an 8.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

It stands out because it blends serious off-road ability with everyday civility, and it still feels true to Land Rover’s off-road roots. For 2026, subtle styling changes, a larger touchscreen, and new color and accessory options help keep it current without changing its basic character.

The trade-offs are familiar: poor fuel economy and a price that can climb quickly as equipment is added. Even so, the Defender’s mix of capability and comfort remains its defining trait.

The market is moderately selective, with 34.3% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2026 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The 2026 Land Rover Defender is presented as a rugged SUV that still delivers a high level of everyday refinement. Its off-road hardware is standard, and the cabin is described as quiet and well finished, which supports the sense that it’s built to handle both rough terrain and daily use.

The powertrain lineup includes an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive, and the available mild-hybrid turbo-six is described as helping improve fuel economy through more robust engine start/stop operation. The Defender also gets a larger touchscreen for 2026, while the new driver-attention monitor adds another layer of everyday oversight.

The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Defender’s complexity and premium positioning can make repairs and upkeep more expensive than you’d expect from a mainstream SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Land Rover Defender?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off-road or fitted with expensive options. Pay close attention to tire wear, suspension condition, and signs of hard use, since the Defender’s appeal often comes from capability-focused equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Defender’s styling ranges from rugged to upscale, with body styles and appearance details that can change the feel of the truck a lot. Base versions are more straightforward, while higher-spec models add more visual drama and premium touches.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 296 horsepower, a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 395 hp, and a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with 518 hp. All models use an eight-speed automatic and standard 4WD.
• Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a surround-view camera system, and a driver-attention monitor.
• Infotainment: A 13.1-inch touchscreen is standard for 2026, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also standard on most trim levels.
• Fuel efficiency: The Defender 110 is rated at 20 mpg combined (18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway) with either the turbo-four or turbo-six, while V8 models are rated at 16 mpg combined. The Defender Octa is rated at 17 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway).

Which 2026 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2026 Land Rover Defender is offered in 5 trim levels: Defender 90 S, Defender 110 S, Defender 130 S, Defender X, and Defender Octa.

Here's the short version:

• Defender 90 S: This is the entry point if you want the Defender’s core character at the lowest starting price. It gives you the rugged design, standard off-road hardware, and the same basic Defender experience without pushing the budget as far as the higher trims.
• Defender 110 S: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it balances the Defender’s everyday usability with the broader four-door format and the strongest all-around mix of capability and practicality.
• Defender 130 S: Choose this if you want the stretched body style and more space-oriented packaging. It suits buyers who want the Defender’s look and capability but need a larger, more family-friendly setup.
• Defender X: This trim leans harder into blacked-out styling and a more aggressive appearance. It makes sense if you want a more distinctive look without stepping all the way into the high-performance Octa.
• Defender Octa: This is the one for you if you want the most extreme performance and off-road hardware in the lineup. It’s the most specialized and the most expensive, so it’s best for buyers who want the top-end experience rather than the best value.

The standard safety package is strong across the lineup, but you should still confirm feature content on the exact trim you’re considering.

Is the 2026 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender’s safety tech is comprehensive, with standard adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a surround-view camera system, and a new driver-attention monitor for 2026.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The current-generation Defender had not yet been rated by IIHS or NHTSA at the time of writing, so you should lean more heavily on the standard driver-assistance equipment and the condition of the specific used vehicle you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2026 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• It adds subtle styling updates, a larger touchscreen, and new color and accessory options.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It offers a broader lineup with more powertrain and body-style variety.

The bottom line: If you want the latest Defender updates without changing the SUV’s core personality, the 2026 is the cleaner pick. If you’re shopping for the widest possible mix of configurations and may find a better match in the prior model year, the 2025 is worth a look.

How does the 2026 Land Rover Defender compare to the 2026 Jeep Wrangler?

Expert Pros & Cons (per CarGurus review team)

2026 Land Rover Defender:

• Pros: Stylish design, Multiple body styles, Impressive off-road capability.
• Cons: Poor fuel economy, Gets expensive quickly.

2026 Jeep Wrangler:

• Pros: Comfortable seats, Plenty of cargo space, Incredibly capable off-road.
• Cons: Poor fuel economy, Noisy, Cramped back seat.

Our experts score the 2026 Land Rover Defender 8.2/10 and the 2026 Jeep Wrangler 6.3/10. The Defender is the more polished and better-rounded choice, especially if you want a rugged SUV that still feels civilized on the road. The Wrangler counters with a lower starting price and strong off-road ability, but it gives up refinement and cabin comfort. If you want the more premium all-around package, the Defender is the better fit; if you want a more affordable off-road icon, the Wrangler still makes sense.
