Is the 2026 Honda Pilot a good car?

The 2026 Honda Pilot earns a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

That lines up with its role as a midsize three-row crossover SUV focused on family use: you get a comfortable cabin, plenty of cargo space, and plenty of passenger space. It also stands out with clever features that help it feel more distinctive than many other three-row SUVs.

The main trade-off is the lack of a hybrid option, so if you want a more fuel-efficient version, this isn’t the Pilot for you. It also doesn’t move the formula forward in a major way, even with the new truck-like look.

With 38.5% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have a decent amount of market opportunity if you shop carefully.

Is the 2026 Honda Pilot reliable?

The 2026 Honda Pilot is presented as a familiar, fundamentally unchanged SUV, which is usually a good sign for long-term dependability when a model carries over without major mechanical changes. Its 3.5-liter V6 and 10-speed automatic are established pieces, and the driving notes point to a confident, predictable powertrain rather than anything complicated or experimental.

The performance write-up also suggests the Pilot is easy to live with day to day: acceleration is more than adequate, highway passing doesn’t require much planning, and the steering revisions were aimed at improving stability and feedback. On the ownership side, the lack of a hybrid system keeps the mechanical setup straightforward, but it also means you won’t get the efficiency advantage some rivals offer.

For used buyers, the long-term risk is mostly about choosing a well-kept example and accepting that fuel economy remains a compromise.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Honda Pilot?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing higher-mileage examples or trims with more equipment. Focus on overall condition, since the Pilot’s appeal is tied to family use, cabin comfort, and everyday practicality.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The entry-level Sport and EX-L trims come standard with front-wheel drive, while all other trims come standard with all-wheel drive. The EX-L adds a wireless phone charger, and the Touring trim adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, and a hands-free power liftgate. The TrailSport is the trim with off-road capability, while the Black Edition sits at the top of the lineup.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses the same 3.5-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. There’s no power advantage between trims, so your decision is mostly about equipment and drivetrain.
• Safety package: All trims get Honda Sensing, which includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a driver-attention monitor, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high-beam headlights. All but the base Sport also get automatic braking at low speeds and parking proximity sensors.
• Infotainment: Every trim gets a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and you need to move up to the EX-L for a wireless phone charger.
• Fuel efficiency: The Pilot is estimated at up to 22 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, 21 mpg combined with all-wheel drive, and about 1 mpg less in the TrailSport.

Which 2026 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?

The 2026 Honda Pilot is offered in 6 trim levels: Sport, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring, Elite, Black Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the full Pilot experience at the lowest price. It comes with the standard V6, the new 12.3-inch touchscreen, the 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Honda Sensing. It’s the trim to consider if you want the essentials and don’t need extra luxury features.
• EX-L: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the wireless phone charger and leather seats, and it can satisfy most families without pushing too far up the price ladder. It also gets all-wheel drive as an option, unlike the Sport’s standard front-wheel-drive setup.
• TrailSport: Choose this one if you want the Pilot’s off-road-capable version. It’s the outlier in the lineup for that reason, though it gives up a bit of fuel efficiency compared with the other trims.
• Touring: This trim adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, and a hands-free power liftgate. It’s the right pick if you want more convenience and a more upscale feel, but the price jump is harder to justify unless those extras matter to you.
• Elite: This trim sits near the top of the lineup and is aimed at shoppers who want a more premium Pilot without going all the way to the Black Edition.
• Black Edition: This is the top trim, and it brings the most upscale presentation in the lineup.

All trims get Honda Sensing, but only the base Sport misses out on automatic braking at low speeds and parking proximity sensors.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Honda Pilot?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 38.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,997 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 91.4% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Honda Pilot safe?

The 2026 Honda Pilot was not rated by NHTSA or IIHS at the time of writing, but the 2025 Pilot received an overall rating of five-star from NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick by IIHS.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

All Pilot trims come with Honda Sensing, which includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a driver-attention monitor, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high-beam headlights. All but the base Sport also get automatic braking at low speeds and parking proximity sensors.

One caveat is that the forward collision warning can be a bit too sensitive, and lane-departure warning can also be sensitive if you drift from the lane markings.

Should I buy a 2026 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 38.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Clever features help the Pilot stand out from other three-row SUVs.

Consider the 2025 if:

• The 2025 is roomy, practical, and easy to live with.

The bottom line: Choose the 2026 if you want the updated look, larger standard screens, and the same family-friendly Pilot formula. If you’re mainly shopping on price, the 2025 is worth a look because it keeps the core strengths and may be the more economical buy.
