New & Used 2026 BMW M5 for Sale nearSan Diego, CA

Is the 2026 BMW M5 a good car?

The 2026 BMW M5 earns a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

BMW positions it as a high-performance version of the midsize 5 Series, and the test-drive data backs that up with a 717-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain, strong chassis hardware, and a setup that can shift from track-ready aggression to everyday comfort. It also stands out because it offers multiple body styles, which adds real-world flexibility to the performance formula.

The trade-offs are clear: the design may be polarizing, and the dashboard layout and interior presentation are awkward and gaudy. Even so, the M5 remains compelling if you want a performance car that still works as a daily driver.

There are 37.8% good or great deals in the market, which suggests you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW M5 reliable?

The 2026 BMW M5 is built around a plug-in hybrid powertrain and a chassis setup that the expert data describes as well-integrated and adjustable, which points to a sophisticated but carefully engineered package. The performance content also notes that the chassis tech feels natural and that the car can be serene on the highway when you dial back the settings.

BMW’s plug-in hybrid setup adds useful flexibility, and the cost-effectiveness data says electric mode is available up to 87 mph, with 25 miles of EPA-rated electric range for the sedan and 24 miles for the wagon. That gives you a practical way to reduce fuel use on short trips if you charge regularly.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is complexity: this is a heavy, high-output performance hybrid with a lot of hardware to maintain, so condition and service history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW M5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with this much performance hardware and hybrid complexity. Focus on how the car was used, whether it was regularly charged, and whether the chassis, brakes, and electronics behave as they should.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard car already brings M-specific styling, a glass roof with power sunshade, Merino leather front seats, and a dramatic interior presentation. The optional Executive Package adds front and rear seat heating plus front-seat ventilation, so base cars miss some comfort equipment.
• Powertrain: You get a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with plug-in hybrid assistance, an eight-speed automatic, and 717 horsepower. The setup also includes xDrive all-wheel drive that can decouple the front axle for rear-wheel-drive behavior.
• Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering and Traffic Jam Assistant.
• Infotainment: The standard BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with version 8.5 of iDrive, YouTube streaming, AirConsole gaming, and a 5G antenna.
• Fuel efficiency: The sedan is rated at 14 mpg combined in hybrid mode and offers 25 miles of EPA-rated electric range. The wagon is rated at 13 mpg combined and offers 24 miles of electric range.

Which 2026 BMW M5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW M5 is offered in 2 trim levels: sedan and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sedan: This is the better pick if you want the core M5 experience with the lower starting price and the strongest efficiency figures in the lineup. It delivers the full performance-and-technology package without the wagon body style’s added cost.
• Touring: Choose this if you want the same performance hardware but need more cargo flexibility and prefer the wagon body style. It suits you best if practicality matters as much as speed.

The safety package note is the same across the lineup: the standard driver-assistance suite is already broad, while the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds lane centering and Traffic Jam Assistant.

Is the 2026 BMW M5 safe?

The 2026 BMW M5’s crash-test results from IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of writing.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering for highway driving and Traffic Jam Assistant for stop-and-go traffic up to 40 mph.

BMW also gives you useful control over the aids: Sport mode reduces most steering and brake interventions, while Track mode turns everything off completely. That flexibility is helpful if you drive enthusiastically, but it also means you need to know which mode you’re in.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW M5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• It adds a more powerful onboard charger and more paint options.

Consider the 2025 if:

• The redesign brought the current-generation body and plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The bottom line: If you want the latest version of the redesigned M5, the 2026 is the straightforward choice because it keeps the core formula intact while adding small updates. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2025 can make sense because it delivers the same fundamental performance-and-hybrid package.
